Graduating 1 year early from High School

I have been thinking for awhile about graduating a year early from high school.

A little background on myself, I am currently in 9h grade with a 4.0 going into this year. School has always been incredibly easy to me, without very much effort. This year I am taking Geometry CP plus Algebra 2 online by myself. I am extremely involved in extracurricular activities, Varsity Golf and Tennis, Debate team, and MGA or Government club. I am also an Eagle Scout. (Sorry for so much information).

I will be able to graduate my junior year with a little extra work on my part (online classes). I have aspirations of going to good colleges such as Dartmouth, Georgetown University, Yale etc. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to graduate a year early or not.

Thanks

My brother graduated early (he went to community college though). If I had to go back in time I would have chosen to graduate early from high school too.

Your scenario crops up here regularly. Most high academic achieving students can meet the minimum state requirements to graduate early. If you truly are looking at very competitive schools, your question should be:“How do i package myself to be the most attractive to THEM?”

By exhausting your academic options. Bored with pre-calc? Take CALC BC as a sophomore. Still bored? Take diff calc at the nearby community college. Your competition will have taken Calc BC and four years of language and sciences. What will your transcript look like?

These are the markers of a true hungry learner – not a smart but bored and directionless 15 yr old.

On the other hand, there are some students who absolutely hate high school. For them, IMO, leaving early may make a lot of sense.

I have a sister who was one of those kids. She didn’t leave high school early and go to Yale, but she did go to Oberlin.

I agree with T26E4…and what is the rush…so much you can take (online and cc) and many HSs offer a full plate of AP Science courses…learn the material deeply…not just enough to make 800s on SAT2s…and maturity is important…that usually comes with time…don’t rush through HS…get involved with real activities even deeper and continue to explore all that you can…maybe become the top debater in the state/region/nation…enjoy HS and work hard…and top colleges will take notice…its all in how you present yourself and be the embodiment of the hungry learner!

U should weigh the SOCIAL aspects of being among the youngest males on a college campus-- probably not fun…
