I was wondering what people on CC think of graduating high school one year early are, essentially pros and cons of it.
I'm currently a sophomore in high school. I am well advanced in math and will be taking calc 3 and possibly AP stats too next year. Hopefully i will have 5 AP classes by the end of my junior year. I'm am involved with key club, FBLA/DECA (went to nationals), club and high school swimming, and volunteer semi-regularly. Age and maturity concerns don't bother me as I will be 18 going into college or senior year of high school. I also don't really care for the social aspect of high school.
I was also greatly concerned on how this will affect college admissions, will it be looked on negatively or will i just have to compete against people who have four years on their transcript. I was hoping to get into pretty selective schools such as the Air force academy, Cal Poly.
Thanks for any time spent replying if any of you have graduated early and can share your experience positive or negative that would be appreciated as well.

I’m interested in this, also. I’m going into junior year with Cal I and II done, so I’ll be taking Cal III as well as AP Chem and perhaps AP Psych/Microeconomics.

I had the option to graduate early but I decide against it so I’ll be completing my senior year in 2014. My decision basically came down to this:

Pros
-get a extra year of college
-not worry about standardized tests and the new education system my school was implementing (more like “has” now)

Cons
-not enough money saved up for college
-haven’t decided what I want with my life yet
-have to quit my clubs and activities early

So I pretty much decided to stick around for my senior year and I haven’t regretted it yet. I’m taking duel enrollment courses so I’m a high senior and college freshman at the same time. In a way I gained back the extra year thanks to duel enrollment and my high school is helping with some of the costs.

It all depends on the person but I realized that being an early grad wasn’t for me.

In general, I don’t think there’s any good reason for people to graduate early. Just take dual-enrollment classes and use the extra year to make the rest of your resume look really good for colleges.

I wanted to graduate early because i just don’t really like high school and would like to get on with my life. As for dual-enrollment, the classes i can dual enroll in at my community college don’t really interest me and aren’t helpful for the majors I’m interested in. (rereading this sounded negative, thank you for the response I don’t mean to totally ignore it)

I think you’ll be at a disadvantage applying to selective colleges after having had only three years to work on your resume.

FWIW, I dual enroll at a state university (my high school doesn’t have an official program for this, but they let me because I finished all my graduation requirements) and I could take graduate math classes if I were at that level. But if dual enrollment isn’t free in your state, make sure the courses you take will transfer.
