Graduating senior here, will answer questions

I was asking out of a mixture of simple curiosity, just in general, and a desire to predict my own chances to an extent, since any information is more helpful than the no information offered on the website.

Matzahballer: I have mixed feelings about my merit scholarship. I've wondered why I received the scholarship I did - maybe I have an unrealistic view of admissions, but I certainly didn't feel that my application was very outstanding. That being said, I've asked admissions officers point-blank about my application regarding my scholarship, and they just told me, "Well, no matter what you think about your own application, you must've been in the absolute top of the admitted class to receive that." I'm not sure if I've answered your question, so if you have any more, please ask.

Sure, they're not ALL philosophy majors but, by far, the biggest school is CAS. And generally speaking, CAS kids are less conservative than Stern kids.

how hard is it to transfer from one school to another? (cas to stern for ex.)
Also, what are the most popular/renowned CAS majors? Is the pre-med program at NYU any good? How much easier is it to get into CAS as compared to Stern?

If you want to be in Stern, apply to Stern for freshmen admission. If you want to be in CAS, apply to CAS for freshmen admission. Don’t count on an internal transfer.

NYU pre-med is very good from what I here, but I think shades would probably be able to answer that question better.

As for good CAS majors, I'll let you know the best departments:

Philosophy
Journalism
Economics
Mathematics
International Relations
English

I'm pretty sure all those departments rank in the top 10.

All three of my interests are in there :) NYU is great.

prehistoric: like FBI_34 said, don't count on an internal transfer. That said, I definitely know of a couple of kids who have done it, so it's possible.

Stern and CAS are both incredibly hard to get into, so I wouldn't choose an NYU school based on that. If your interests lie in one or the other, choose that one - you'll have a better chance anyway.

brand_182 - which 3 ?

Econ, Math, Philosophy.

I'm hoping to transfer in and double in Econ-Math and Philosophy.

I didn't realize how good NYU math was until I got here - It's supposedly on par, if not better, that a couple of Ivies.

All really outstanding departments - good luck that sounds like quite a heavy course load! With a strong math interest, I would definitely recommend the theory rather than the policy Econ major.

thanks anton that's my preference. I may just minor in Philosophy...it'll depend I guess on how many more classes they want for a philo major as compared to minor.

That's great - sadly I didn't have time to take any philosophy courses though I really wish I had made that more of a priority especially considering it is such a strong department.

Given your interest, I'd recommend a course called "History of Economic Thought" whcih it is sort of a combination of economics and philosophy. You'll learn about the economic theories of Smith, Ricardo, Malthus, Marx etc. It is was one of my favorite courses because it was really fascinating, and because Professor Kitsikopolous is outstanding! He's a tough grader, but he encourages a lot of in class discussion and he likes to really get to know his students.

Thanks! That sounds awesome.

is Tisch School of Hospitality hard to get in. whats the average sat/gpa?

Err, do you mean Tisch? If you mean Hospitality (hotel management, etc), I believe that's in the School of Continuing & Professional Studies.

yeah i meant that school. whats the average sat/gpa?

Jimgotkp, I still have no idea which program you're talking about. Are you interested in one of Tisch's programs, or are you interested in the School of Continuing & Professional Studies's Hospitality program?

In addition, have you searched the appropriate website for the information you're looking for? It's a lot faster to do the search yourself rather than wait for someone here to do it for you. If you haven't tried, you should - if you can't find it, then ask again.

uh.. i tried to find it but they don't post the information. yes im talking about th school of continuing and professional studies' hospitality program

Erm I'm still not sure what the difference between the theory track and policy track in the econ department is. And would I like get crushed under the workload if I were to major econ and double minor psychology and prebusiness? Really, be honest. Frankly, I want to have a life in college. I've had enough with this taking 4 APs mess.
