Graduation gift reply

For some odd reason, I can't post a reply on the thread about graduation gifts...so I'm answering via this "new" thread. Sorry.

If we have a windfall of some sort, we would love to replace the used car DS is driving with a new one when he gets his masters. We asked HIM what was important and he said...comfortable seats, fuel economy, and a good warranty. We are looking at the Hyundai Elantra, Yaris, Fit, and Versa...and maybe the Mazda 3. Don't forget when you do your "bargaining" to toss in that this is for a college graduation. Many car manufacturers also have a "college graduate" discount...about $500...but hey...every penny counts.

We are dangling a used car for S his Junior year (he is only going 1 hour from home) if he wins some independent (from the U) scholarship $$--so far he hasn't applied...sigh

Oregon....our DD got a fabulous scholarship at an OOS public. Our net cost would have been about 1/3 of what we are paying at the private school (a better choice...we agreed) would have been. We offered not only a NEW car, but also the purchase of a condo her soph year...that's how LOW the bills would have been. It did NOT work....we couldn't bribe her one bit. We know five other families who made similar offers to their kids...told them if they went where the money was...they would have a car. NONE of these kids took the offer.
