Graduation rates after 8 years (200% of normal time for completing degree)

Many schools graduate and additional 1-5% between 6 and 8 years after entering program. This is new data available from IPEDS for the first time. It was never collected before. The time limit is 8 years for schools with 4-year programs and 10 years for schools with 5-year programs.

I think graduation at Brigham Young is delayed due to missionary work.

The percentages who graduate after 4 years seems higher at the publics. Less financial pressure to graduate on time? Or, is it easier to get the courses you need at privates?

My guess is that publics attract more “non-traditional” students who may take time off/take classes part-time while working full-time. Small, rural, expensive schools have little draw for working people or those not typically college-aged.

ch:

privates generally offer finaid for only four full years. Thus, one has to get a degree and get out. OTOH, publics allow kids to stick around and change majors like clothes, all while continuing finaid into a 5th year (and more).

Interesting, but I’d be curious to know what time span is covered in this data. I find it improbable that Bryn Mawr’s 8-year graduation rate could be only 78% when its 4-year graduation rate is 81% and its 6-year graduation rate is 86% (as reported in US News, presumably from the Common Data Set). That seems mathematically impossible—how could you graduate 86% of a given year’s entering class within 6 years, only to see the percentage go down by the time you get to year 8? Unless we’re talking about very different time periods. But in that case, as the Bryn Mawr example illustrates, we may be talking about ancient history by the time we have 8-year data. I guess i’d want to see richer data showing trends and trajectories over longer time periods, not one-year snapshots of what’s happened to a single class that entered 8 years ago.
