Grammar Help

While i was looking for some extra SAT grammar tips, I stumbled upon these unusual grammar problems.

(1)Puzzled, the children scratched their (head / heads).
(2)Many sons dislike their (fathers / father).
(3)The boys moved their (car / cars).

Supposedly both 1 and 2 require the singular head as opposed to heads, according to someone who stated he quoted this from an SAT prep book. He stated that a singular head is needed as opposed to heads because heads implies that the children had multiple heads each, which is clearly wrong.

Now that i think about it, I am not actually sure which is the correct answer.

----Off Topic ( still grammar related)

Could someone please refer me to a well versed site in the verb tenses and exactly when and when not to use them. I have searched google and found mediocre tense-related sites that do not completely explain each tense.

heads- the children do not have one head (unless freaks)
fathers- many sons signify that the sons are not related and therefore have diferent fathers
car- though I think it could go eitehr way? this question doesn’t have good context.

probably sparknotes.

(1) and (2) need to be plural. (3) depends on context.
