ok i made a stupid mistake on my Cornell application, where i say "countless fundraiser" instead of "countless fundraisers", and also i forgot to hit enter, so there is no space where there is supposed to be, and one other stylistic issue, all of which i think are quite serious... the ? is: have i totally blown it? is there anything i can do now? -- thanks in advance

Hi hajen,
I don't think small grammatical mistakes undermine your chances. However, if you made a lot of them, they'll probably take it as carelessness, and even doubt your interest in the school.

I think I made the biggest, worst mistake ever. While trying to say 'corporate valuation', I instead said 'derivatives valuation', which can mislead readers to think that I have no clue what the hell I am talking about. Anyone with bright ideas to approach this disastrous mistake?

I know...I also made a mistake on my Duke application. While i was trying to say, "its citizenry's tendency of prolonging ITS..." I wrote: "its citizenry's tendency of prolonging THEIR..."

hopefully these won't impact decisisons that much, but are you guys going to send something to clarify, is it worth it? or do u think it will just bring attention to the mistake?

um..shouldn't really impact that much if it was just one or two...

I used "ever" instead of "even" and ended exactly one sentence with a preposition.

I wrote carrer instead of career in the Harvard app on one of the short answers, and I checked it over so many times.

That is the problem, as my English professor is so fond of noting; when examining a paper so many times, it is hard to see the forest for the trees.

It's obvious that we all made mistakes. It's highly likely that they won't really take it seriously unless you make mistakes often.

I don't think you should write to them regarding the mistakes. They never like excuses.

lol unfortunately! but it still looks so bad, really careless when there is are these silly errors, that's what is killing me, and i really don't want that to taint my essay, but u are probably right, writing to them would not be worth it (even though there is this obvious 'i didn't hit enter' in my essay)

nspeds, try to read your paper outloud.

I don't think I'd call attention to the mistake or error. Who knows, maybe they won't even see it given the fact that they have tons of essays to read. They're probably pretty good at speed reading, wouldn't you think? Besides, I'm sure even some of the best essays/apps have an error or 2. As long as there aren't more than 1 or 2 that sends a red flag, I think you should be ok.

Exactly

My errors were not on the official essay. Both of them appeared on a supplementary document that further elaborated on my reasons for wanting to attend the school; it is four pages long, single spaced, and the two errors are near the end. I think they will dispose of the document after the third page, at any rate.

nspeds,
What school/s did you apply to? Man, a 4 page single-spaced supplementary document? I only did a paragraph or 2 for each one, aside from the essay that's 1 page single-spaced. UVa didn't want anything longer.

yes nspeds my "structural" error appeared on my long "why us" essay, but unfortunately it is on the second page, and my other error is on another essay, so technically two essays with errors

I only submitted the four page supplement to Rice University, since I have very specific reasons for wanting to attend; this contained an explanation for my poor performance in high school, what I have done after graduation, and why I wish to attend Rice.

Edit: I also provided a 30-page, double spaced, article that I am trying to have published.

where else are yo u applying?

Georgetown, UT - Austin, and the University of Houston. I only submitted the 30 Page supplement to both Rice and Georgetown.

You may all, simultaneously, be relieved:)

lol i guess we shall find out in may
