Hi there,
I’m slightly confused by GRE and requirements - is it absolutely necessary that I do subject tests, or will the General Test be OK to get me onto English/Comparative Lit? They don’t appear to be required by my college choices, but that may be because it’s considered so obvious they don’t have to say.
As far as difficulty - I have seen some threads with Brits moaning about how hard it is, but… it’s multiple choice? With half-hour essays? I would love it if you could all tell me some common pitfalls/difficulties/things I ought to be working on, because I am certain the difficulties are not where I think they will be…
(I’m doing my first practise GRE tonight and the workbook is in the post - I didn’t even know it existed until Friday )
If the college doesn’t say it requires a certain test, then it doesn’t require it.
For me at least, the GRE was roughly the same difficulty as the former SAT (with a different format, obviously) - the vocabulary/sentence completions were the hardest for me.
Isn’t there an actual practice test on-line on the GRE site? Regular GRE shouldn’t be harder than SAT based my D’s experience. Of course with math section, it depends on your undergrad experience and how many years since you’ve had any math. Unlike SAT/ACT, the regular GRE is computer based. Did not take either daughter full estimated time to complete.
Many masters/PhD programs do not require a GRE subject test - the one’s I remember from Ds experience were mostly for STEM majors. D did the math GRE subject test and it was hard. Heard the same about Physics. But a simple call to places you are applying (if not on the web pages with admissions requirements) should answer the question of if you need one.
