How similar are the GMAT and GRE exams?

Not very...

how do they differ?

Well, I suppose I should be a little clearer. They're similar in format, different in difficulty. The GMAT is purportedly more aptitude-focused than the GRE, which still requires more rote memorization of vocabulary and mathematical formulas than anything.

What exactly are these two exams?

GMAT is for admission to business schools and stands for Graduate Management Admission Test. GRE stands from Graduate Record Examination and you need to take it if you are seeking admission to general graduate school programs (including engineering).

I have taken both GRE and GMAT -- found preparing for GMAT much easier. GRE needs an extensive preparation <rote learning=""> in vocabulary (especially for non-native english speakers). I found GMAT to be more related to your aptitude and how well you can think.
There was not much difference in the level of Math -- except for the format of questions asked.</rote>

**pmat

To expand this....how about the GRE and LSAT? If I'm torn between grad school and law school...will my preparation be completely different between each exam? Just wondering before I figure out what to do...

bump........

I think that the LSAT is more closely related to the MCATS then the GRE is. If so it requires learning subjects and just just memorizing words and math formulas.

I'm pretty sure I want to eventually get an MBA, but if I'm not sure if I want to do a grad program in econ should I start studying for the gmat or the gre first? will one help with the other? thanks.

"I think that the LSAT is more closely related to the MCATS then the GRE is. If so it requires learning subjects and just just memorizing words and math formulas."

Actually it is quite the opposite. The LSAT is more of an intelligence and 'thinking' test.

So if GRE's are for general graduate school admission then would I need to take the GRE's for graduate film school?

Depends on the program.
