lotf629, his scores are typical. I work with Boston public school students from Madison Park, West Roxbury, Dorchester, South Boston High School, etc... (students are generally the best of BPS). The average SAT score hovers around 1200 out of 2400 (350-450 CR, 450-550 M, 400-500 WRT).

These scores are just another product of urban education, or as staff like to call it "half the education that suburban (MetroBoston) kids are receiving".

He is one of a handful of seniors I have with SATs between 350 and 400, average writing score was 7/8.

Also, everyone, many thanks yous for all of your suggestions and advice.

You've got to help him learn to take the tests. Those are terrible scores. Even if he gets into Bowdoin or others, he's gonig to need to be competitive. Help him learn to succeed on tests.

The sat's are very weak...he needs to really identify a solid choice for him that will not be cost prohibitive. Though he is first generation & Latino, his poorer standardized scores will be weight on his app & most colleges, knowing the state of urban education will look at his strong gpa with a very critical eye.

oh god that SAT score is terrible...no offense but i got 200 points higher out of 1600 when i was in 7th grade...

if that SAT score goes up to above 550+ on each section, he has a great chance at a lot of good schools
