Hi Everyone,

I'm guessing that everyone is preparing for the october sat.
So here is a thread that might help some people out.
Can everyone that has gotten a good (or bad) score on their SAT essay post which examples they used? And if possible, can you also say how u used the example accordingly to the prompt?

Personally, I always use a lot of modern examples and literary examples.

Just to start, here is an essay that one of my friend, who got a 2400 on his sat, says is worth a 10 or 11

Do people need to compare themselves with others in order to appreciate what they have?

When we contrast ourselves with the people around us, the effects arent always positive. Therefore to truly appreciate what we have, we do not need to compare ourselves to others. We only need to look inside ourselves to recognize our valuable skills.
Paul Potts, the winner of the 2007 Britains Got Talent, valued his voice through his passion for singing instead of comparing himself to other contestants. Paul was bullied when he grew up and became very reserved later on in life, but he was never shy about singing. He loved to sing and saw his voice as a source of relief from his meager life. When he sang in Britains Got Talent, his confidence for singing on stage came solely from his voice. To Paul, his voice is what he valued the most, but he did not do so by comparing himself to others. He did so through his belief that he was born to sing.
Many times, it is actually detrimental to compare with others because it can cause exceeding pride or jealousy. As shown in the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, Dorian Gray, a beautiful young man, became extremely proud of his own beauty through constant comparison to what believed as an ugly and dull society. After receiving a self portrait from his friend Basil Hallward, Dorian realized that he will age but the picture would stay beautiful. He quickly wished and longed that the picture will age instead and that he can retain his beauty forever. The wish miraculously becomes true and the picture gradually aged as Dorian stayed the same. However, this caused Dorian to become haughty toward other people and bitter toward himself, and in the end, Dorian paid the ultimate price of death after realizing the sins that the picture brought him. Had Dorian not compare himself to others to appreciate his beauty, he wouldve lived a happier life without all the burdens of his crimes.
Whether it is a talent such as singing or just pure physical beauty, people do not need to constantly compare themselves to others to appreciate what they have. Comparisons to others can only cause unwanted pride or jealousy that can destroy a persons life. We just need to believe that we all contain something that we can appreciate.

You can rate this essay if you want.

But anyways, I know that these example threads has been posted before, but from what I see, none of them really go in depth into how people used the examples and etc, so I guess that this is the purpose of this thread.

thanks to anyone that contributes
