Great graduation gift

Input, please. We will be getting high school graduation gifts for our kid's close friends, and are looking for suggestions of things that college freshmen found (or would have found) really great and/or useful.

We probably will be spending @ $25 per gift, and would prefer something more personal than just giving money. (Or would you suggest just giving money?)

If you want to be creative, you could make a sort of college "kit". For instance, it could have a DVD, few things of popcorn/candy, whatever. Or a bunch of school spirit stuff (there are cheap t-shirts/face paint/hand warmers if it's a football school.)

One of my friends got me a really neat-looking collapsible chair that I found handy, but I have a lot of room in my dorm (which might be an issue.)

The collapsible chair is a great idea, kelseyg. Thanks!

I would give them like gift cards to best buy so they can find something they like. Just because you run the risk of buying them something that they will never use. Just like what happens to me at christmas time, I love when I get like gift cards and cash, so I can pick out stuff I really want.

computers?

My best graduation gift EVER? A handmade afghan blanket in my favorite colors. I love it- I take it with me everywhere I move (except when I went abroad). I've gotten a lot of comments on it when I was a freshman because it was so unique and different.

Eh, not I'm saying that you should take up crotcheting... but even something simple and practical can be awesome gifts.

She said she would be spending about $25.00...

I would reccomend just stuff to use around their dorm. You know the type of stuff- the type of things that you can get at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Or maybe even a Bed, Bath and Beyond gift card.

the best gift i got was a free subscription to a list of 50 magazines. i chose 6 issues of cosmo, but it varies by magazine. it's great since most everyone loves to get mail. it's like 17 or 18 dollars so it's fairly reasonable.

here's the link: Barnes & Noble.com - Giftscriptions: 50 Choice Magazine Collection by Magazine Retail Enterprises Inc.: Home & Office

Fold up chair is an excellent idea. Those always come in handy. Bonus points if you get one in the schools colors (or their carpet/bedding colors if you can find those.) You really can never have too many of those.

I've been eyeing these spider-octopus extension cord thingies - oh, they're called power squids. I'm sure college kids have lots of things that need outlets, and these squids are a great design.

A lot of dorms ban extension cords.

hi. i can't remember exactly where i saw this idea but i thought i would share it. i know you said money might be a bit impersonal but it might be cute if you gave them a check or a gift card with the amount written for $20.08, like for the class of 2008.
