Great Multiple Choice, but Poor Essay...

I took the ACT today. I'm tired. I want to sleep. I want to curl up in a ball and die. And not because of the multiple choice: I did fine and dandy on that! But on my essay, I didn't finish it well... I didn't completely develop my thoughts... And I'm worried for a poor score.

Is it worth retaking in this case? Does anyone know how much the essay is evaluated in the context of Ivy League admissions and other top schools? I really don't want to have to retake and pay $50 just for the essay, especially running the risk that my composite might end up lower (I'm hoping for a 35... or more, haha... on this test). What to do?

My son had the same story when he came home.

What to do? Sleep. Play some PS3. Do your homework. Wait for the scores to come out on April 30.

You can also search for “Common Data Set” for each college in which you’re interested and look at item C8C to determine how each college treats the ACT essay. For example, Emory says it considers the ACT Essay for admission and as a validity check on the application essay. Davidson says it has no college policy as of now. Rhodes College is not using the essay component. While you’re at it, you can see for yourself what each of your prospective colleges will require regarding standardized tests. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the information. I appreciate the help!
