Hi Everyone. I’ll be straight to the point here. Let me know if you need any more information.
International, Online Student from Canada. School is American. In grade 11 now.
GPA:
Weighted is high 4s (haven’t calculated it lately but straight As in my APs so far), UW is 3.94
ACT With Writing: 35
might take two SAT subject tests, not sure yet. No AP Exams (was informed that they wouldn’t help me by my admissions counselor
ECs:
Bad. I have pursued some business opportunities, but haven’t made any money yet. I have a ton of ideas, but follow-through has been difficult for me. Apart from business opportunities, I haven’t had many of the standard ECs as I live in an extremely remote cottage (no cheer captain for me, lol). I’ve done some CS courses (two of which were ECs) and learned Python, JavaScript, and Java, all to a reasonable understanding. I have filed a patent and worked on licensing products, but to no avail (yet). Some writing contests here and there.
Letters of Recommendation:
I have been blessed with some incredible teachers, all of which I can safely say will give me a glowingly positive recommendation! One of which is a highly distinguished English teacher.
Major:
Entrepreneurship/Business. Possibly stats/financial engineering/data science for a few schools.
Schools:
Dream:
Harvard, Dartmouth, (another school here, not sure which yet… maybe MIT, Columbia, or Stanford depending on SAT subject tests)
Reach:
Vanderbilt, Northeastern, UCLA, Waterloo (Canadian)
Others:
Portland State, UCSC, UC Boulder, University of Washington Seattle, some Canadian schools.
Classes:
8 APs. 2 Honors over the course of two years (everything before g11 was not honors or AP because I didn’t realize I would be good at them). 2 Business classes (not AP nor honors).
Story: (important)
To keep it short, it took me three years to finish around 4 pass or fail classes doing homeschooling (different than online) with my mom. After that, I was faced with a choice, do another three years while being two years behind all my friends, or give up and live off my (rather wealthy, to be honest) parents. In order to do the three years, I would have to dedicate hours a day on working while traveling and working in really distracting environments. Since I have always had a dream of being apart of this technological revolution that’s taking place, I decided that I needed to go to college, so I did those three years and really excelled. I learned so many things by doing online school-- none more important than discipline and self-motivation. I had no accountability, I worked every day for me and only me. There were no requirements for me. Most students (according to the teachers at my school) fall extremely behind on their standard courses because there simply isn’t real accountability. I’m pleased to say that I was able to stay on top of my courses in the most distracting of environments and take one of the hardest g11-12 schedules I could. I also am doing two summer courses in order to fill prerequisites so I can take AP Calc in my senior year.
Tuition:
I’m thankful to have an RESP for me and my siblings, and my siblings aren’t attending college so tuition isn’t a major concern of mine. Though preferably not the most expensive schools in the country! I understand I have some state schools on there, but I will likely just go to a Canadian school if I don’t get accepted to any of my dream or reaches.
Thank you, so much, everyone!! If you have any questions I’d love to answer them Even suggestions for schools would be really appreciated.
