Greek Life at UChicago!

Hi, everyone! I'm a rising second-year involved with Greek Life at UChicago, and I've been blown away by the sheer amount of interest incoming first-years seem to have expressed in going Greek! Accordingly, I thought I'd share my thoughts here for anyone who is considering going through recruitment in the fall.

There is a surprisingly rich tradition of Greek Life on campus, and going Greek was, without a doubt, the best decision I made in my first year at UChicago. The bonds Greeks develop with their brothers or sisters are indescribably wonderful, and the entire Greek community on campus often feels like an extended family. Approximately 20% (and growing every year!) of the undergraduate population at UChicago is affiliated. Ultimately, Greek Life provides members with an invaluable opportunity to develop leadership skills, truly influence the direction of an organization, and cultivate a group of friends who will support one another unconditionally. Sororities at UChicago don't own physical houses, but they often pass down apartments shared by sisters from year to year. Fraternities, on the other hand, do usually have a house.

Generally speaking, the three sororities and five fraternities with asterisks are better fits for prospective new members who are confident that going Greek is right for them, whereas the remaining fraternities and sororities may be better fits for those who are more unsure about Greek Life.

Sororities:
Alpha Kappa Alpha
alpha Kappa Delta Phi ("KD Phi")
Alpha Omicron Pi ("AOII")
Delta Gamma ("DG")
Kappa Alpha Theta ("Theta")
Pi Beta Phi ("Pi Phi")

Fraternities:
Alpha Delta Phi ("Alpha Delt")
Alpha Epsilon Pi ("AEPi")
Delta Kappa Epsilon ("DKE")
Delta Tau Delta ("DTD")
Delta Upsilon ("DU")
Lambda Phi Epsilon ("Lambda")
Phi Delta Theta ("Phi Delt")
Phi Gamma Delta ("FIJI")
Psi Upsilon ("Psi U")
Sigma Chi ("Sig Chi")
Sigma Phi Epsilon ("Sig Ep")
Zeta Psi

As a fourth year student in Greek Life, I would not rank the Greek organizations by “better fits for prospective new members who are confident going Greek is right for them, whereas the remaining fraternities and sororities may be better fits for those who are more unsure about Greek Life”. Each organization has their plus and minuses. Be sure to look at all of them and see which one fits you best. Some organizations may be growing and some may have been there for longer. Either way, choose which you think is best for you because it is a very worth while investment and lifelong friends you’ll make in the Greek community.

Hey, I’ll be attending UChicago this Fall, and am also interested in Greek life! My one concern, however, is the pledging process? How crazy is it?
