Greek Life or Dorms??

So, I was thinking of joining a sorority (not sure which, maybe Kappa Delta but I would make a final decision later of course...)
I already applied for housing (Haggett, Hansee, McMahon, McCarty in that order) but I know I'll get the deposit back if I register for recruitment before September 1 so that's not a problem...

Can anyone tell me anything about Greek life?
- How involved are the sororities on the campus?
- Is community service important or is it just something done once or twice a year because it has to be?
- How close is it to stereotypical Greek life (drinking/ partying/ etc.)?
- Is there anything I should know about it that I probably wouldn't find out otherwise?
- How different is it living in the sorority house than living in dorms?
- Can anyone tell me more about recruitment week other than what's online on the panhellenic site? Just curious if there's anything else I should know.

So yeah.
Info on the sororities please :)
[and if you wanna say anything about the four dorms listed above, please do :) ]

I have the same questions about joining a sorority, it would be awesome if somebody could answer, since websites are generally vague and cannot reveal much on the living/social situation.

Exactly! Some specifics would be lovely. Or any insight whatsoever.
Pleasssseeee?

If you’d really like to know, I can get you in contact with the rush chair of one of the sororities I’m familiar with and she could probably explain the process more to you?

Nah, I’ve been in contact with UW Panhellenic.
I was looking more for stuff from people whose goal isn’t to make it sound awesome. I want to hear about the REAL experience. Thanks anyway though.

I did Greek Weekend this past weekend and I honestly had to tell you that being in a sorority was completely different then what I thought it would be. We did like a mock rush, and the girls that were in my group were so diverse, not the stereotypical rich fake girl you thought they would be. A couple of them were in the UW Honors Program. As for the sororities, I think it honestly varies from person to person. Everybody who is in the Greek Life is so diverse, there is not just one type of girl who is in there. The ladies I talked to where bright intelligent woman, some that majored in Aeronautical engineering others in Pre-Med.

As for the living situation, I prefer it over dorms, because being in a sorority is like a home away from home. You have a chef, maid, as well as den mom- woman to talk to and give you advice, sow your clothes, etc… Majority of sororities have a sleeping porch, a room where there are a bunch of beds or bunk beds where a lot of the girls sleep. At first this might sound frightening but most of the girls I talked to love it. The sleeping porch is 24/7 complete silence and dark so it is great to take a nap when you want to!

Sororities are very involved with community service. They have a philanthropy event every single week. They are also very involved with the UW, multiple girls I talked to from different sororities work at Husky Stadium help planning sporting events, PR, etc…

As far as partying, no matter where you go in college, there will be partying. Yeah there are some girls in sororities who party, others not so much who go to the movies/dinner instead. All sororities are completely dry where there is absolutely no alcohol allowed.

I hope I was able to help!

That helps a bit. Thanks
I was hoping for someone here was already in a sorority that knew all the dirty (or not so dirty) details could shed some light but I’m glad to hear from someone that went to Greek Weekend. I wish I could have gone… but Virginia isn’t exactly convenient to the UW campus…
