So this question might seem a little silly, but what exactly does it mean "to rush" (as a guy)? What do you do when you rush? Is it just fraternities throwing big parties and trying to meet the brothers there? Or is it formal occasions?

I just am really confused about this. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

There’s formal university rush (you pay a rush fee like 25$), have to do these events and online registrations, its supposedly alcohol free, they tell you how awesome the greek community is…

And then there’s real rush that happens more or less underground and concurrently. After you meet some guys or contact their rush chair and give them your number you’ll have fraternity guys try to be your friend, call you and drive you around and invite you out to parties, out on a boat, buy you dinner, buy you alcohol etc. and this goes on for like 2 weeks and then they vote to give you a bid. If you get a bid and if you accept the bid (you start your pledge process) and usually you attend a formal cocktail to celebrate - go out to dinner and drink. And then the next 8 weeks your low on the totem pole until you officially become a member. It’s a huge time commitment so be ready to work if that’s the route you want to go.

Each fraternity is different and there will be different expectations but you never have to drink or do anything you don’t want to. Make sure you talk to people from your high school or in your classes or that you otherwise know and try to get a sense of the fit between you and that fraternity. Though random people might not know everything, you’d be surprised how much gets around about their different processes. If you have concerns, talk to the current brothers directly.

I second the “huge time commitment” part.
