Greek Life at UNC?

I just got in as a sophomore transfer, and I was wondering what the greek-life is like in Chapel Hill. If I go, I'd like to rush and meet people ASAP. Is it really crazy? Hazing? Can I rush my first semester?
Thanks in advance

First things first-are you a guy or a girl? There a lot of differences between frats and sororities…

Alright cool. Hazing is technically illegal, but lots of frats still do it (although they can get in big trouble if it gets too bad or if they get reported). You can def rush your first semester-first week there are a lot of open parties for the frats to meet potential rushees, then the next week there are cookouts/pong tourneys/dinners, things of that nature that you can go to if you have an interest in a certain frat. There are a lot of frats up there, def something for every personality if you choose to rush one. Top three are SAE, ATO and DKE in my opinion, although Lambda Chi knows how to throw down and the others are pretty straight as well.

What about for sororities? I’m a bit nervous coming in a transfer and trying to join the greek system. Especially since I’m coming from a small women’s college and I’m from NoVa. I’m a bit scared I won’t be able to fit in with the “Southern Bell” image.

how does the frat rush system work? do you rush/interview for them all then get bids, or do you have to pick the ones youd wanna join and then interview for those specific ones?

Join a sorority because you want to join a sorority, not because you’re afraid that’s the only way to make friends. Trust me, there are a billion other ways to make friends at UNC and sorority life is just one… very one sided way.

The sororities at UNC aren’t the “southern belle” variety that you’ll find at South Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee or Bama to name a few where black cocktail dresses and pearls are the normal dress for football games. The overall Greek scene at UNC is far more laid back. My D is Greek at South Carolina and it is a very different world there; not bad but more intense.

Delta Upsilon (DU) is another to look at. It was re framed on campus in 2004 and after its first full year back on campus won the top fraternity trophy in the annual IFC awards. They had to suspend operations after their old house required too much in repairs after another on campus fraternity house fire (that killed several of its members) members caused all the fire codes to be changed for the fraternity and sorority houses. They are on Rosemary St in the Historic district and their new house which opened in late 2005 or early 2006 had to be an (external) replica of the original.

Check them out; I know they take transfers (not all do) because one of my son’s roommates junior year was a transfer student that pledged DU.

The first week or so of classes there are a ton of frat parties; you can usually go into all of the houses and get a feel for which ones interest you. The next week is rush week, where you pick maybe one or two that you are most interested in and go to their rush events. Some frats have interviews, some don’t. At the end of rush week, the frats will make their bid votes and you’ll find out who wants you

I’m not too sure about the sorority rush process, its pretty different from fraternity rush. If you really want to do a sorority though, there is one out there for everyone. It isn’t a necessity, so don’t feel pressured or that you absolutely have to do one in order to fit in.

Does anyone know anything about Phi Beta Chi, the Christian sorority?

I know a girl who didn’t get a bid. For the CHRISTIAN SORORITY. w t f.

Haha, well they don’t have to give bids to people that they don’t like, just like any other sorority.

So I guess that’s a good sign? I was just wondering if they were kind of dorky and super Christian, or just not mainstream sorority types. Religion’s important to me, but I’m really liberal and from the North – does anyone know if they’re evangelical or all kinds of Christian?

Um…I’d venture to say that most of them are Southern Baptists…a.k.a. not the most liberal group on campus…

does anyone have any info on the NPHC sororitys, like how there intake process is since I know they don’t have an “official” rush
