Greek Life! Whats it like to get in?

Hey im an admitted male freshman for fall of 07. Im really interested in OSU and im thinking of attending. Ive really become interested of living in a fraternity but i have some questions:

1) how easy is it to get into a Frat at OSU. is it really selective that unless your not like some jock or u have a flat 4.0, your not gonna even get a chance to join or what?

2) also another reason for joining aside from making friends, is that living accomodations might be nicer ina frat house. is this true? :P

3) finally how cruel are the initiations?

can anyone help me out here?

I'd like to know too! I know that statistically frats have lower GPAs, so I don't think the 4.0 thing is important, and that the Greeks do a lot of community service (in addition to partying!). I would like to know how the Rush thing works, what it's like these days to go through the introductory stuff (hazing?) and what Greek life is like in the frat houses.

Some schools have frat web sites. Anybody know if OSU frats have their own web sites?

Yea well the reason ims o curious is cuz I was looking at the URocks.com videos of certain schools and they had a video of Ohio State and one fo the things they mention is that its not so easy to get in (not academically) just socially. So im curious as to what thype of sick things u gotta do to get in lol?

As a freshman who just got initiated into a fraternity, let me give you my 2 cents.
1) It depends on the kind of crowd that you fall into. Different fraternities have different personalities, and thats all about you going out there and meeting different fraternities and their brothers. I don't mean going to their parties, because that is not a good indication of the guys there, and all you are seeing is one side of what fraternities do and have to offer, there is WAY much more to offer. Try to go to any other of their social nights, which are usually found on their website, get to know some of the brothers and try to get a feel from them. My fraternity took me and other pledges out to dinner at least 2-3 times before they considered giving us bids.
2) Accomodations in a fraternity house are typically alot nicer than the dorms or living off campus. Although I highly recommend you living in dorms your freshman year, to get the dorm experience and to decide yourself whether or not it would be better to stay in. On the average, fraternity housing beats dorm living costs by a long shot, a heck of alot cheaper. There is also a meal plan for off-campus students, something like 40 swipes, not enough to be eating on campus even for a month, so some fraternities have chefs that come in and cook meals, or you go grocery shopping and buy your stuff.
3) Initiations are not cruel at all, or at least mine wasn't. It was actually a pretty awesome experience. Of course if I told you, I'd have to kill you haha... well I have 4 friends who each pledged and got initiated into 4 different fraternities, and all of them had the same experience as me, we didn't get touched at all, or have to do weird things. There was a big crackdown about a couple years ago where alot of the fraternities lost their charters and had to rebuild because the IFC (Inter-Fraternity Council) did their own investigations into some fraternities and found some accoutns of hazing, or other things, so everyone is really straying away from hazing at all.
