Greek Life & Social Scene at OSU

I am trying to decide between OSU and a few schools, leading me to ask some non-academic questions. What is the Greek life like at OSU? Is it dominant? Greek and Non-Greek, how is the social scene? Is there a fair girl/guy ratio?

Thanks!

Greek scene isn’t as prominent at OSU as other schools, but it does exist. I would say it is “below average”, especially for large state schools.

Ah. What is the social scene like then (without the greek life)? Is it a school where it’s looked down upon. I certainly do not wish to go to a school where it is difficult to meet people…have heard stories from people going to commuter schools…even USF. It sounded pretty bad.

how could you possibly think social life at osu would be bad with 39,000 undergrads and some of the best sports in the country. high streets is all bars you’ll be fine. lol

@footballin11 - Ohio State is NOT a commuter school by any stretch of the imagination. USF, on the other hand, is to a degree. In the numbers I could find quickly, only about 4,400 students live on campus, although about 70-75% live within a couple of miles of campus (and presumably in student apartments). I am not finding Ohio State on-campus percentages at the moment, but I am pretty certain it is much higher.
USF is working to change the perception that it is a commuter school, but The Ohio State University is not perceived as one as far as I have been able to tell during our four years in Ohio (used to live in Tampa).

OSU is a huge party school, but not as Greek-centric as other schools. Hope that concept makes sense.

Manhattan & einstein: So things are cool for guys under 21 even without frats?
VailsMom: Thanks for the info! I’m glad to hear from someone who knows about both OSU and USF. =)

“cool for guys under 21 even without frats”? There are crackdowns on underage drinking, open container, etc. especially on football weekends. Kids do get arrested especially when there are complaints or blatantly bad behavior.

Yeah, that is true of pretty much every major public school. Just don’t do anything stupid or irresponsible and you won’t get into any trouble. Plenty of house parties to go, and it is very easy to conceal drinking in the dorms if you and your friends want to chill at night - I am not suggesting this to you, I am merely pointing out that it is done and have personally observed how easy it is to do this at several schools, public and private.

To give a bit of background on Greek Life here: There are 14 PHA sororities and over 30 IFC fraternities along with countless other multicultural fraternities and sororities as well as business and honor sororities and fraternities.

I am in a sorority and I can honestly say that it helps make this campus much, much smaller. You get a lot more involved and you get to know a lot more people. I am really glad I joined…there is literally a fraternity or sorority for every type of person here. I highly encourage you to go to an info session to hear more and meet some different people. In fall, the student involvement fair will have all of the fraternities/sororities out on the oval handing out info. If you have any other questions, let me know!
