How competitive is greek life here? Is it difficult to get into a sorority, or are most girls invited into one?

I also have a question regarding letters of recommendation. Are they required/make it much easier to get in? Who do you get one from?

You can look on-line under student organizations and read about general info, plus I think you can find links to individual sororities. I know they send out info in the summer about rush and there is information at orientation. Also may be facebook page that answer rec question.

D has one friend who joined as freshman, and two that joined as sophomores. My impression (no personal experience) is that if you are open to all sororities, then chances are good you’ll get a bid. Lots who drop do so because they aren’t getting invited to their “must-have” sorority.

Hello, yes, Greek Life is fairly competitive but not as intense as some of the other SEC schools. You can get recommendations from anyone you know who was in a sorority. Start asking teachers, neighbors, people you work with, parent’s friends, etc. Recs are very important. There is also a website called Greekchat.com that can give you a LOT of insight into going through recruitment – recs, clothes, social skills, attitudes. You’ll find several threads that are “stickied” at the top of their pages. Read, read, read and don’t post anything that can identify you.

My daughter is in a sorority and absolutely loved it and had a great time. Keep your options open. Don’t get your heart stuck on the “one and only one” and don’t listen to the chit-chat. All chapters have – nice, mean, fat, skinny, stuck-up, friendly, blonde, brunette, whatever – girls. Look critically at where you’ll make the best friends – not just what letters you’re wearing around campus.

Good luck and have a great time!
