Greek Life

will do, ma'am. just asking for a general opinion until i can get there. you're absolutely right in suggesting that no one on cc can replace time on campus.
i don't NEED to be in a sorority. i don't NEED to interact with more than a few people on campus. i will not judge the students by those in their sororities, but greek life IS one of the many facets of university life that i am taking into consideration in choosing between schools.

It sounds like you have your head on straight! I was just concerned that you not take CC advice too seriously - especially on the Vandy forum, which often draws some very interesting comments. However, you seem to have a good perspective on the role of this forum.

In a thread that rears its head every so often, waiterock posted this comment in Feb. '08 (excuse my lack of knowledge on how to quote in shaded text). I think her comment is still relevant.

"there is no such thing as a bad sorority
I'm a freshman at Vandy and recently pledged. Going into recruitment I had certain ideas and stereotypes about every sorority and was determined on a certain one. However, its soo different once you acctually go on rounds and meet the girls and experience the houses. I ended up cutting that house for one that I never expected to like, but now I can't picture myself anywhere else! If you are seriously thinking of comming to Vandy, I would wait and rush once you get here. Every sorority is sooo different, and believe me, the stereotypes that others have posted do not fit everyone in that sorority. Yes, Tri-delt has girls that are blond bombshells, so does ADPi and KD. Yes, Theta and Chi O have really religious, southern girls, but so do Kappa and DG. I rushed because I wanted to be in a house where I would be accepted and have fun. I did not rush to be in a house that had a certain stereotype that I wanted to be associated with. However, this is a personal thing. Good luck!"

How much interaction is there with sorority girls during first semester and then during rush week? Do you actually get to talk to them during the rounds or is it too busy and hectic?

Vandy13,
There are rules about the interactions during the first semester. I remember that one of D's friends from tennis team had to declare her ahead of time as a pre-existing friend so they could interact during first semester. Rounds go by quickly and you are put in a set order going in the door and pre-matched with members of the chapter for the short rush party. Your Greek Ambassador will prepare you for all of this during the fall semester.

what does rush consist of at vandy (how long does it last, how do the frats go about picking, etc..) im considering vandy for next year (in hopes that i get in) and im very interested in greek life. I visited and a couple of my cousins (theta girls) said that SAE KA and Sigma CHi were all good frats. i think SAE appealed to me the most because it has a really tight house and i consider myself to be pretty southern (and from VA played a lot of sports, social, etc..) insight please...

Ok - to something a parent considers - $$ - how much (additional) is going Greek going to cost? Is it just fees or housing or what? thanks

Lots of information here for both students and parents:Greek Life at Vanderbilt University
BTW, only 6 officers live in each house. S said one time that it originally had something to do with a TN law that said any more women than that and it could be considered a brothel, but that seems like it is probably an urban legend!

i think that is true!

Really? I thought maybe S was pulling my leg!

That is what I've heard on campus too! Either way, I kind of like that you don't have to live in the house and limit yourself. I think between delay-ed rush and the non live-in requirement it is one of the more 'relaxed' Greek systems out there. However, I believe it still dominated the majority of the social scene on campus.
When do we first meet our Greek Ambassadors and has anyone had a good/bad experience with their GA this year?
I remember my good friend on campus telling me how their GA accidently told them what sorority she was in! Is this common?

I believe you first meet your Greek Ambassador in September. I know one Greek Ambassador who received little presents from some of her "flock" at the end of the process, so the experience must be good for most! While Greek Ambassadors do disaffiliate for the semester and don't wear their greek letters, etc., they still attend chapter and if you catch them in their cars, they may still have greek decals there. If you wanted to dig hard enough, you could probably figure out which house is your GA's.

What is the situation if a guy doesn't want to be in a frat? Would he be isolated, socially speaking?

Another question, for those in the know, what is Vandy like with regard to issues of race, religion? What is it like if a guy is Asian, Jewish, Latino for example?

Sounds like that guy probably has interesting family reunions.

Hahahaha! Thanks, SAE.

I'm actually curious to know as well... how likely is a girl who isn't a WASP (although close) to get a bid from a "top" sorority (or any sorority for that matter)?

I like to think our Greek system is above petty racism.

[edit: I HOPE to think our Greek system is above petty racism.]
