Greek scene--a Dartmouth pro or con?

Dartmouth Guy, so true reTeatotalers:
I never understood what this "peer pressure" stuff was about when they taught drug ed. I mean, my entire social group drinks (high school) and I happen not to, and I don't care and they don't care. I have friends who do weed and don't drink, friends who drink and don't do weed, friends who do neither and we all go to the same parties. The substance or lack thereof isn't the glue of friendship! While I'm addressing you, though, let me ask this: I look at the kids my hs has sent to D over the last 3 years and they are NOT the previous stereotype of "well rounded"---they were all more "lopsided" as Harvard calls it, and in these particular cases, a better fit for MIT (stereotypically). Socially, these kids never saw the dark of night. Do you think D is doing this on purpose, to cut down on kids who are more social/more likely to party(with or without substances) so they can rid themselves of the unfair negative rep tied to drinking they've developed in recent years?

Uhh, Cruncha, I think some serious drinking goes on at MIT, too.

They've been trying to do that for the past ten years. The former President of the College (as of 5 years ago) was known for believe the perfect college student was basically a quiet, studious, loner.

I guess he liked independent thinkers.

The current President just dislikes the Fraternity system - I don't know how he got the job given his stance on the issue that many hold at heart around the school. I guess he was a good administrator or something (whatever that really means)

To your question, Cruncha22: I hope not! I am one of those "more social/more likely to party/well-rounded" students and I am going there next year partly due to that "negative rep." Well, anyways, at least we know then they're not only accepting students they think will prove "quiet, studious, loners." I put "sociable" as one of my five words. Although I did write my essay about being in awe over a piece of literature...

For those that know, the administration doesn't like the Greek System.

The SLI (student lift initiative) was penned in 1999 and effectively said just that.

the conservative newspaper on campus has a lengthy special this month. Interesting for the interested

Scimmia, you're not alone. But in my observation, people like you and me are getting dinged for just that reason. I cannot even believe the kids they've taken from here over the last 3 years. If you fill the place up with kids like those 3, it isn't the D I think of as a haven of normalcy among the Ivies. And, as things get increasingly competitive, only robots will end up getting in anywhere...
