Nope, no Pike. The national frats are SAE, Sig Ep, Psi U, and Alpha Phi Alpha (African American). But mostly its local frats (more fun, less rules and stupid books to memorize).

The classes range in size, some are small some are big. But since you pledge as a sophomore they arent that big (the biggest might have 35 a class on average). The smallest might have 10 a class. Mostly they are very friendly and welcoming, i.e. none of the "brothers only" stuff you encounter at other schools.

The college is letting the frats stay alive for now...

Don't forget Zeta Psi :)

Opinions on Frats at D? Good thing? Bad thing?

I think its a good thing because the scene is so free so everyone is pretty much welcome everywhere. Its basically like having 17 free options to go hang out at.

The negative are some of the bigger frats are pretty jocky, but the webster ave frats arent nearly as much that way.

Does any body know about Alpha Phi Alpha, interested in that frat?

I have a good friend who was in it...

The good thing about Dartmouth frats is that they are not at all the "who do you know" insecure drunken fratboys like at a lot of other places. Whether you are a quadruple legacy at Theta Delt and know right now that you are going to rush or you're just planning on occasionally going to the dance parties, you'll be able to do your own thing with no pressure or anything.

PS Slipper can I talk to you on AIM about something?

I've heard that certain ones have certain reputations and stereotypes. Like TriKap was an asain one, etc. What are the stereotypes and do you think they're fair?

TDX and GDX - football frats
Chi Gam - baseball frat
Chi Heorot - hockey
AD - really ragey Animal House frat
Psi U - sorta like AD
Phi Delt - rugby
SAE - preppy frat
The Tabard - stoner frat
BG - lines of coke off your Powerbook
Alpha Theta - the nerd frat (sorry, but it's true!)

Then there are some that aren't as well defined. Alpha Chi is also sorta like a stoner or alternative frat, Sig Nu is the marching band frat (whatever that's supposed to be) but not really, Phi Tau is the dry frat, and Sig Ep...I'm not really sure about Sig Ep. It has a very strict national organization that forbids hazing (I mean they all do but these guys actually mean it apparently). I also heard from somewhere that they have a none-exclusive rush process, meaning if you want to join you don't need to get a bid, you can just sign up and you're in. The house is huge, something like 120 people. Then there's Zeta Psi. Zete is sketchy because it is not currently a recognized frat. I personally think this is dumb and that it's a great frat, and a lot of other people do too, but it does have that rep. So I think that's all of them, if I got one of them wrong or whatever, any of the other Dartmouth people can feel free to correct me.

Oh and yes, Tri Kap is the Asian frat, I didn't mention it because you already said it. They throw really sweet parties and they are the masters of pong.

is Phi Tau actually dry, as in, its a rule and they follow it, or that's just the reputation?

(i think that's awesome, btw. I'm not a guy, so I don't mean for myself, but the idea of having the frat-ness without the drunken-ness seems very cool)

Phi Tau is dry...they just don't get beer or anything like that and also the people that join are into that, which is why it can continue to be like that I guess...like you wouldn't join unless you wanted to be dry. Also, Phi Tau is co-ed, so you could join if you wanted to.

That may be true, but joining a national means you can go to any other college campus (that has that frat) and they will let you in...I find that really cool.

Xan, sure thing. getrickyj is my screenname

My version of the frat descriptions:

Nice guy frats:
AXA: Tight brothers, very "chill"
Sig Ep: Nice do gooders, big house
Tri-Kap: Hip-hop techno + Asian/ Black/ Urban

Sketchy fun frats:
Chi Gam - baseball and tennis + sketch
AD - Soccer + really ragey Animal House frat
Phi Delt - Ragey Rugby + random crazy

Jock Frats:
GDX - football frat
TDX - Lacrosse and Basketball and jocks
Chi Heorot - hockey and other winter sports (ski)

Preppy Frats:
Psi U - Nothing like AD, rich kid preppy crew house. In animal house would be Omega
SAE - preppy nice guy frat

Alterno Frats:
The Tabard - Hippie/ Stoner
Panarchy - Raver/ Hipster
BG - Chill guys doing lines of coke off your Powerbook

Nerdy Frat:
Sigma Nu - Band, nerdy 80's frat

Dungeons and Dragons:
Alpha Theta - They play dress up
Phi Tau - They wear capes!

Outside of the Dungeons and Dragons frats, people pretty much go to the parties at all of these. In a given weekend there might be 2-3 parties, and people tend to pull a circuit. There are also tails (cocktails) and people play pong in every basement so every house is usually happening to some degree. Plus a couple sororities throw some parties too!

Yeah I've only been there a few times and I didn't really know how to classify it. I read somewhere that it was like AD (and well the p*ss walls seem similar) but I can see it being a preppy frat.

And Panarchy isn't a frat...if you're going to mention Panarchy you may as well mention Amarna which is a coed society.

I've hung out at pretty much all of them. Psi U and AD are like night and day.

Yeah Panarchy is not a "frat" but it has a big presence in a certain scene. I dont think Amarna really has that sort of following, but you could throw it in there as well.
