Greetings new Exonians

“We as Exonians have a weekend now, which is really really nice”

What do you mean? Do you not have as many Saturday classes? What do most people do? What are the rules about going to the town of Exeter? (Sorry, I have a lot of questions.)

@nervousmom4, you can request a dorm, but I personally would advise you not to. i guess it’s a personal choice, but imo, you don’t really have a true sense of any dorm before actually attending exeter, so requesting a dorm is kind of limiting your experience. i say, just let admissions do its work and you’ll end up wherever you end up - random, but everything happens for a reason. that’s just what i think though…

and there used to be prevalent dorm stereotypes, but they’ve been pretty much broken down recently… or at least in my class.

i think dorm stereotypes are still prevalent but they are “coming down” as the post above says.

YES, saturday classes have been limited for this past winter term, spring term, and next year i believe. Usually its time to crunch down on homework, hit the gym, maybe go out… depends on the student

As a prospective Exonian, I’m definitely not looking forward to Saturday classes, even though they have ben scaled down.

On a lighter note, though, anyone else received their acceptance packet and enjoyed the one personalized sentence in the letter?
My dad was convinced I was just ‘special’ but I’m pretty sure everyone had a little something about them in the letter.

Wait…can someone provide a little more specificity on the Saturday schedule. It is no longer every Saturday? Exactly how often are there Saturday classes? This could make a difference…

Here you go–next year’s schedule.

http://www.exeter.edu/2012-2013_DOS_calendar.pdf</a></p>

PieLover–That sentence is fun, isn’t it? But yeah, everyone gets it.

What’s the most fun thing about PEA?
I can’t wait to attend in the fall!

@ kaflookey

Looking at the spring schedule this year, there are classes on only two Saturdays. There is also a free three day weekend.

Travel to Boston is very easy if parent has given permission - the train stop is on the edge of campus.

Parents have to give specific permission for anything outside the little town of Exeter.

So excited!!! Just accepted as well. The only thing I’m debating is whether to attend an (also amazing) day school or (perhaps in its own league) Exeter. :P

So wait, how does this new schedule work? There are no more Saturday classes; so are there fewer class periods, or are they just more densely packed within the week?

Also, speaking of dorms and stuff, is there ever like dorm envy and stuff? I mean, from the very little I’ve seen, I think it’d be really cool to live in one of those dorms right next to the Academy Building and stuff. Are the facilities (rooms, common room) of some dorms better than others? Do you actually get a choice? Also, how about roommates? Should I ask for a single or a double (I definitely don’t want a triple, if there are any)? Sorry for all the questions, but it’s all so exciting!

I wouldn’t necessarily say that there is a most fun thing about PEA, but there are definitely fun traditions that we all look forward to. Jazz Brunch in the winter, E/A when it is at home (especially because we have won the football game for four years in a row). Other little traditions are really fun.

Also, watch this video if you haven’t seen it already. Our facility made it and presented it during Dance Assembly.

Thanks classicalmama

I coiled have counted wrong but even without all the Saturday classes Exeter seems to have 21 more school days than Andover. Amazing.

Just an interesting note, I found a PEAN (the name of our yearbook) from 1991 in my dorm. On the cover it had a schedule from 1987 that had a five-day, rotating schedule very much like the schedule that we have now. I wasn’t sure if it was a joke from the '91 yearbook staff, or if Exeter had conducted a Saturday-free experiment in years past.

As far as dorms, there are some stereotypes, but the deans seem to have been trying to erase those by mixing up the type of students that they place in each dorm. We’ll see how that works. I don’t know how much the students shape the dorm stereotype or the dorm itself shapes the students. A few people don’t like the dorm they’re placed in for their first year and move, but the vast majority love where they live and would probably be happy in almost any dorm.

I prefer the south side of campus, but might be because I live there. The south side has the library and Elm St. dining hall, which is open every day. I also live very close to they gym, which is nice because it motivates me to work out in the winter and I can stop by a game if I feel like it. The downside is that it takes me awhile to walk to class from my dorm, but only like 10 min tops. Nothing like the walks on Andover’s campus, from what I have heard. If I were a guy, I would probably like to live in Abbot Hall on the north side, as it is the oldest large dorm and is literally right next to the academy building. Grill, a place in the Academy Center where we hang out a lot, is also on the north side.

Personally, I think that it would be best to have a roommate, at least for one year. It gives you the experience of sharing space with another person, one of the perks of boarding school. You may have a crappy roommate, but I think that the Exeter student body is a pretty good pool of students to choose from for a roommate.

Also, for those wondering about Saturday classes, I think they added another week or two onto the end of the school year to make up for the removal of them. The also got rid of one of the 3-day weekends (which is a bit unfortunate) and put Academy Life Day on a Saturday instead of a Monday, or something like that.

Accepted to Exeter, Andover and others. Honestly, I’m choosing between the first two. Why choose Exeter? What sets it apart? What’s the social scene like? I attended summer school and loved harkness but really disliked the peer interaction(basically everyone in my dorm followed two girls around.) its a lot different than summer school, right? and are dorms chosen randomly or is there some kind of method behind it?

00isme, you shouldn’t be asking complete strangers to pick which school you should attend, mainly because what would make us choose Exeter over Andover, could be the exact reason why you would choose Andover over Exeter!

You need to ask this question to yourself, “Which school is going to nurture me and make me the best me that I can possibly be?” You don’t have to make this huge decision just yet. I say wait until after revisit days. Ask your parent’s opinions as well, sometimes their opinion could be the deciding factor.

Thanks for the response, but I was just trying to see what current students considered to be exeters defining attribute, because im leaning towards PA.

Choose Exeter because it’s amazing! Just kidding. Choose the school that speaks to you, that’s the most important! But, here’s a list of why I love Exeter.

1) Library. We have an amazing library, one of the largest, if not the largest, of all secondary schools. There’s so many floors, you can do group work in the basement, read on the first floor, do homework and the ground 2/2M/3M/third floor, and do people on the fourth(did i just say that?) just kidding! (fourth floor has a stereotype). But we have everything in this library! There’s even a letter from Gandhi to Exeter from years ago that someone dug up and posted on Facebook! There’s so many first edition/collectors/signed books, and on the fourth floor you can see cases and cases of all the special momentos collected over the years.

2) The teachers. I love our teachers. They’re part teacher, part family, part friend, part hero. They know how much work we go through, because they’re doing just as much, if not more! But they also know that we crave a challenge, and are always there to work us out a bit, and tough us up, while teaching us not only math or German, but also life lessons. Who else gets that in physics class, learning about circular motion? Plus, our teachers are funny too. Exeter Faculty Evolution of Dance - YouTube (i’m not sure if it’ll link, pittsburgher brought it up on the previous page and I can’t access youtube right now), but watch that!

3) The campus. Our campus is gorgeous! Everyone says it looks like Harvard’s, but I haven’t been to that so I can’t vouch 100%. However, it’s so nice because it’s compact yet separate, and the farthest you’ll ever have to walk is around 15 minutes, tops, from one side to the other. Most of the time it’ll be more like 5-10 minutes to go anywhere! We have such a pretty north side because of all the academic buildings, and the south side is nice too because of the library. Everything looks beautiful when it snows too! Plus, downtown Exeter is right there, and it’ll take less time to get there than from the farthest dorm to the gym! There’s also a train station very conveniently located, probably a 10-20 minute walk, and the train can take you right to the heart of Boston whenever you’re craving the city life.

4) Harkness. Don’t say it’s overblown, okay, you can say it- no, whisper it, just once! But believe me, it really is great! I love Harkness for all classes, yes, math and sciences included! It really makes you think about what to say, why to say it, and how to do it! These are skills that you’ll need for the rest of your life, no matter what you take or don’t take from class! Harkness math is so amazing, you have so much fun problem solving with your classmates, and I’m pretty sure those dang-hard problems are created for you to get such a rush when you figure them out! You feel really accomplished in English when you come up with a topic to discuss that the teacher loves, just like you do for every other subject! Harkness really does make class a lot more integrated and more fun to go too, (if any teenager in this day and age can really LOVE going to class!!)

5) Dress code. Call me superficial, but it makes the school a whole lot better. The guys are just…classier. The girls, well, can and do get away with too much, but as a whole, they’re decent as well. Everyone just looks so sharp, I like to call it, really REALLY casual business-casual. But get crazy! You have people in all pastels, and you have people with snapbacks, jeans, and untucked shirts. It’s enough freedom to be creative, but also enough to make sure everyone looks appropriate for school. And, when you need to dress semi-formal for other things, you pretty much know how because that’s how you dress during the school time!

I love Exeter for so many reasons, but there’s just not enough time to list them all. I also love the classes and people, but who wouldn’t at the school he/she chooses? But in the end, just go where you feel is right. Do both revisit days to get a good feel about where you actually fit the best, and take what everyone says, including me, with a grain of salt, because only you can tell what you really want.

Spring break ends today… Looking forward to greet all (future) Exonians on revisit day

I’m having a look at Exeter’s course booklet, and I’m slightly confused by how sports/PE works at Exeter.
So my understanding is that Preps have to take either SPAZ or a sports team.
For me, I love soccer, so I would like to be on Exeter’s soccer team. However, what if I don’t make it? Am I required to sign up for SPAZ? Or how does that work?

Thanks (:

Pielover

Sports or PE are required every term for every year, except for uppers and seniors who can “opt out” for one term of the three each year.

If you make a JV or Varsity team, that replaces prep spaz. Otherwise, prep spaz is required for preps. Other PE electives are available for lowers, uppers and seniors.
