I am just about to commit to Grinnell College and I am wondering if I graduate with an Economics Degree from there would that be outstanding? Not in a sense of being super good but would it stand out to those looking at my resume? I hear that it is not necessarily known for business, however, it is a very good school. So basically I am wondering if I will have an upper hand when applying for a job with this school on my resume? Is it well known? I hear they have numerous connections?
Grinnell students are “smart.” In higher education, that should count for something:
Why are you going to commit so early? Are you a recruited athlete?
My take on early admissions is only commit if you are 99.9% sure. Are you able to afford the school with no loans or not much debt for your family?
BTW, few LAC’s are known for business. That major is more known in pre professional schools such as Babson or state schools, UT Austin McCombs.
You would have to be comfortable stretching yourself in humanities and quantitative classes.
BTW, I think that having a liberal arts degree in business is a good thing- teaches you to write about and articulate your ideas in a thoughtful clear manner. Also, this education provides a global perspective with a deeper understanding of ethical and the longer term impact/consequences of business decisions.
Yes, an Econ degree – really, any degree – from Grinnell would be outstanding. It’s generally regarded as an elite/top-20 LAC for the following reasons, among others:
- It is a rich school, with a very strong endowment. This means Grinnell can afford to spend large sums of money on its students, faculty, housing, food, etc.
- It is home to a very smart student body. You'll be in (mostly) small classes with great profs and lively discussion with intelligent students.
^ Yes, agree. We know one family whose child ended up there and this was certainly a very intellectual but down to earth family. My D was also accepted there and if given more merit might have ended up there.
