Grinnell Regular Decision 2022

@pcmom1 I recently saw a guy riding a bike while wearing a sleeping bag. However, I better just wait for the packing list and have another cup of coffee ~O)

@pcmom1
We are 7th on the list. Chatted with the admin person responsible. She told me the early admission group invited to event were separated into categories (donā€™t know if it was by region, potential major etc) a certain number of overnight slots were available for each category. Ours filled up quickly. But she said people tend to sign up right away whether or not they know they can come and then cancel later. Note to self if this happens with another school to go ahead and sign up as quickly as possible!

Stats of kid with $25,000 scholarship are 4.0 UW GPA, 35 ACT one sitting, and numerous leadership positions. Accepted to ED2 school the same evening, so will not be attending Grinnell.

D also offered 25K scholarship. Has 4.0 UW / 4.67 W GPA, 35 ACT single-sitting plus deep extracurriculars in sports and art.

D was offered the 25K as well. Has a 4.0 UW/ 5.25 W, 1480 SAT, student body officer, rank 3/425 and will earn the IB diploma.

Damn, I have 36 ACT, 4.0, Val, 800,780 and I still havenā€™t heard anything :frowning: am I alone? Maybe because Iā€™m international?

@Zxcvbnm111 - my daughter is an RD applicant with very good stats (but not a ACT 36 - wow  and she has not heard a decision. Sheā€™s a domestic applicant.

The college admission process is not easy to decipher, and I know itā€™s stressful for all these amazing students who have worked so hard and are so talented. Hang in there; Iā€™m sure youā€™ll get good news from colleges soon. Good luck!!

@AlmostThere2018 thank you  I hope we both hear back soon. Good luck to your daughter!

Also, anyone knows when Grinnell releases 50k Scholarship winners? @AlmostThere2018, maybe your daughter and I are being considered for that one?

@Zxcvbnm111 - my daughter is a 1550 SAT and perfect 42/42 IB predicteds. We are US citizens living abroad. Fingers crossed!

@Zxcvbnm111 ā€“ well, that would certainly be nice, wouldnā€™t it? But, alas, certainly not counting on it. Good luck all!

When I called the school admission office and asked about $50K scholarship, they said they offered 15/20 of them to each incoming class. She wasnā€™t clear whether they already sent the notifications to all those recipients yet or not. What interesting is that she told me if any of the $50K recipient decides not to attend Grinnell, they donā€™t reassign it to any other student. Basically the money will go back to scholarship pool for next year! I wish they offer it to some of the top ones from $25K list!

@sanjosedad ā€“ Thanks for that intel. I found an article on inside higher ed about how some midwestern colleges, including Grinnell, had an unusual and somewhat bumpy cycle for class of 2021. It all ended well for Grinnell ā€“ but I wonder if they are doing some things differently this cycle like really honing in (through aid and early admit in RD) on folks they think are most likely to enroll. Does anyone know if they did the early admits in the RD pool before? Anyway, Iā€™m truly happy for all those whoā€™ve gotten good news already. I hope Grinnell is an option for my daughter as it seems pretty amazing! Hereā€™s the article if anyoneā€™s interested ā€“ https://www.insidehighered.com/admissions/article/2017/05/15/some-liberal-arts-colleges-midwest-had-challenging-admissions-cycle

Yes, they have done early admits for RD applicants in recent years.

@AlmostThere2018, yes you heard it right. Last year they couldnā€™t fill in all spaces for incoming class! Being in Iowa really put them in a great disadvantage, compare to east or west coast top colleges. If the school were in New England, or in Bay area or in Claremont in SoCal, they would have an acceptance rate in the range of single digit and high demand. This reminds me of another small top notch engineering college Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana. They are consistently ranked #1 among four-year engineering colleges, but have hard time to attract top students, who rather prefer Harvey-Mudd, Cooper Union or other highly published colleges. I was told by Grinnell admission that they sent about 400 acceptance letters to the early ones and invited them to March Admitted Day event, top of the talent pool. Rest of the RD notification will go in March.

@sanjosedad Wow. Canā€™t imagine turning down $50K scholarship from Grinnell! I guess we will never know but Iā€™d love to know who does that and where they decided to goā€¦

@homerdog, I know from my own experiences, lot of my friendsā€™ kids ditched out top notch state engineering colleges for Ivy league names(Except of Cornell, rest of the Ivy league schools are nowhere near top notch state colleges like UC Berkeley, UCLA, Univ of Michigan, Georgia Techā€¦) But the allure of attending Ivy league is sometime very hard to resist among lot of families in the country. One example I can mention one D got a total free ride all the way to 9-yr undergrad and medical school program in Northwestern Univ., but she refused it and went to Harvard, costing parents hundreds of thousands of dollars of loans against home equity. Then she got accepted in state medical schools, UCSF, UCLA but again chose Stanford medical school, much more expensive than UCSF/UCAL! Just one example, you will find tons of example like that!

@CValle she sounds like an awesome applicant, good luck to yā€™all!

@AlmostThere2018 definitely not getting my hopes up, though. Lol.

Test

Oops sorry

Iā€™m messing up hereā€¦I will try again. Our son was awarded a Presidential,Scholarship, last year. He accepted the offer and is extremely happy at Grinnell. Chose the school, over,NESCACS. He was waitlisted at Harvard, but I think he would have still chosen Grinnell. Just asked him when he heard from th school he said it was right around this time last year.
