Groton School, MA.

I decided to make a thread on Groton seeing as it's one of the few major schools on CC that doesn't have one. Also, there isn't a lot about Groton avaliable on the internet compared to Andover or Exeter, so I'd like to learn more. Winterset suggested I become a Groton rep on CC, so I decided I will. For those of you who don't know I'll be attending Groton in the fall. Hopefully, I can come back and answer questions once I'm there. I know Grotonalum and hola went to Groton so hopefully they'll share their experience? Yes, I know I'm overly enthusiastic :)

Thanks for putting this thread together. I am the parent of Synchroswimmer who comes on this board occasionally. She was accepted to Groton 2nd form. As you said, there is very little information on Groton on this board. We will be doing the re-visit day on April 6th. Would like to hear from people on a few things

 • what is the appropriate dress code for re-visit day. Jeans allowed?
 • If we visit her at school will she be allowed to stay out with us during the weekends that we visit? Hopefully she would want us to visit!!
 • Also when we visit would her siblings be allowed to stay with her overnight?
 • Any Groton specific things she should definitely take with her to school - say a chair, carpet, safe?.. anything worth mentioning.
 • What is the appropriate amount of pocket money she would require every month.
 • Do most students do their own laundry or outsource it.

Any help on these would be appreciated. Thx

I also was wondering many of these things. I believe that for revisit day you should follow the dress code. You’re not allowed to wear jeans during class at Groton, so I assume that you probably shouldn’t for revisit day. Has the dress code if you havn’t already seen it. I guess I’ll see you at revisit day or in the fall. I’m class of '14 though :)

I might be going to Groton too, so I’m happy we have a thread
I’m pretty sure (check the iPaper thing for confirmation, it’s the student handbook) that the II and III forms are not allowed to have furniture in their “cubes” (what they’re calling the dorms, since they have that 3/4 wall).
I’m so excited! Revisiting on the 31/1st, I know Blue is too, anyone else?

Go Groton!

Thanks!!! We need more info!!!

BlueRaven1, it’s great that you are a Groton rep on this forum. I wasn’t very interested in Groton to begin with, but because of you I’ve been researching Groton extensively lately, and most likely I’ll apply next year as a new sophomore.

Any current Groton students out there, this question is probably asked several times already, but here it is anyway: since the majority of the class has been together since 8th grade, do new sophomores have a hard time integrating?

i think more than two thirds of the class is new in 9th grade

I was kind of concerned about that to Assign but the amount of kids starting in 8th grade is tiny compared to the amount of kids starting in 9th. You might have more problems coming in as a 10th grader because a lot of the kids were “Lower Schoolers” together, or at least that’s what I’ve hear. (I Think the "upper school’ starts in IV form? I’ll go check that). Plus I’ll hang out with you, so you won’t have no friends or anything. I can’t really be a rep of anything yet seeing as I’ve yet to start there but hopefully I can help convince the new CC applings next year to apply! :)

Assign, they offer aid to int’ls?

what is the appropriate dress code for re-visit day. Jeans allowed?

I wouldn’t recommend jeans, but don’t get too formal either.

If we visit her at school will she be allowed to stay out with us during the weekends that we visit? Hopefully she would want us to visit!!

Yes she will, she just needs to turn in a weekend slip by friday that takes only a few seconds to fill out

Also when we visit would her siblings be allowed to stay with her overnight?

yes.

Any Groton specific things she should definitely take with her to school - say a chair, carpet, safe?.. anything worth mentioning.

Not really, just typical boarding school stuff. Couches aren’t allowed for lower schoolers though.

What is the appropriate amount of pocket money she would require every month.

There’s really not much opportunity to get off campus, and the only pocket money you really spend on campus is if you order food.

Do most students do their own laundry or outsource it.

There’s a large number of people who do E&R- they pick up your laundry every week and do it for you, and there’s a large number of people who do laundry themselves.

**Since Blue Raven has been so nice and despite the fact that I usually support a school further north (but occasionally try to be balanced ;)), Groton IS a wonderful institution. So… here are some very recent links for Groton: **

**These are just the most recent, and I have ties to two of them. A recent Groton graduate is effectively my godson. All of you that are going to Groton should be proud. It is a great and storied school. Most of the above are examples of your school’s motto: “Cui Servire Est Regnare”

Advice: post regularly, know your school, provide links, do not bash other schools (except in athletics), forget rankings (you know your school is #1), encourage students, alums and parents to visit and answer your questions, search the internet for useful and interesting current/historical material.

Good luck!**

LauraZee - Thanks for answering my questions. heading up to Groton with my daughter for revisit day today.

Where does Winterset get this information? lol

He’s omniscient. ;)

Just trying to help Blue Raven. I have tried to lend a hand to both Deerfield and Groton. Occasionally I try to disprove the view that I only stand up for one school. :)

Andover and Exeter seem to be fine on their own. Plus a previous SPS Alum helped them both years ago (Harkness).

No, it’s okay to help Exeter. I would like to read about and see their videos on youtube.
Is it pronounce GROW-ton or GRA (rhymes with raw)-ton?

urbanflop, neither. It’s GRAH-ton.

That’s confusing.

I always thought it was GROW - TUN

nope neato is lying, its Gruh-tone.
Neato how mean of you, tricking the youngsters like that! tsk tsk tsk ;)

What is it ? Like seriously, fo real …
