So I was called for an interview with one of the admissions staff at The School of General Studies. I imagine this cannot be too bad, because if they were planning on flat out rejecting me they would not be wasting their time with an interview. If anyone has any suggestions or pointers it would be very much appreciated.

I interviewed for them a couple weeks ago and got accepted. You've probably already had the interview by now, but if you haven't, here are a couple things to have ready..

They are not there to talk about your accomplishments, instead they want to know about any blemishes you may have. For example, like me, mediocre score on SAT essay... etc.

Next, why are you choosing this degree plan? Im choosing economics so he basically asked what interests me about it and what do I plan on doing with that degree. He also asked what other degree plans interest me.

But yes, you being interviewed is a good sign. And like I've posted before, they weren't trying to be intimidating, really they just want to get to know they type of person you are.

Good Luck

Yes i had the interview today. My interviewer was very straightforward. He asked about the blemishes on my record. He spoke to me about the concerns that the committee had about me, including my math history. Overall i think it went quite well. How long did it take them to get back to you after your interview and did you get a call or an email?

Hi Eric and TDM: I too was called for an interview, mines is scheduled for tomorrow morning and I was applying to the Economics degree program as well. I was a little concerned about my college transcript though, my gpa took a hard hit since i didnt manage my time well while working almost full time to pay the tuition at my previous university. Did either of your interviewers discuss grades or previous transcripts at your interviews?

TDM and Harlem

TDM. I interviewed for them on a friday and the guy said I should know within a couple of weeks. However, he called me on the following wednesday and let me know I was accepted. So, I'd say within a week. Try not to think about it too much though because you will go crazy!

Herlem. Yes, they will ask about your grades. If you had a bad semester they will want to know why. They probably wont be confrontational about it, just more concerned. Just put an emphases on you having to work so much because that's what the GS program is all about, people having to work to get to where they're at today but are desperately seeking an education.

Hi All! Thanks for the tips Eric! I had my interview this morning and i think it went pretty well. She did tell me the same thing about the committee meeting sometime next week and that I should have a response in a week or so. And she asked me 2 questions about alternative degree programs. I applied for Economics which I've heard is a pretty rigorous major, so I'm wondering if there's a possibility that they may not accept you for a particular program but will offer you admission to study another program. Has anyone ever heard of this happening before?

From what I've been told, you don't get accepted into a specific program, you get admitted to the school. So the major you have selected won't make much of a difference because you can change it once you get admitted to the school.

Yes, econ is right about that. But in the essay everyone makes it clear of the degree he or she is choosing, so they look at that. Let's say you have a bad math background and you're applying for a program that requires up to cal 3. That doesn't look too appealing. However, if you make it clear in your essay you want to be an English major, they won't ride you as hard for the math. Thus making you look more appealing.

Does that make sense?

Eric: Yes that makes perfect sense, thanks for your input. In addition, I got a call from Kay today in the admissions office, she's the same lady i met with this past Friday for an interview, and she congratulated me on my admission, i got in! This was the best news I'd heard since they opened that 7-11 uptown in the Bronx (sometimes I have to get my slurpee fix lol) Good Luck to all of you out there who are still waiting for a decision on your application. Oh and eric, you got accepted right? did they mail your packet by regular mail or fedEx to your home? I was a little worried about that because i'm at work in the daytime and no ones gonna be home to accept it for me.

is it bad that i had an interview the day before you did and i still havent heard back? Now im going to be all nervous until they notify me...

TDM: Did you have your interview on the phone or in person?

I'm going for mine tomorrow afternoon with the Dean of Admission's. I'm very nervous!

TDM: No, I dont think its a bad thing, I think the person who interviews you has a lot to do with it though. do you remember the name of your interviewer? My interviewer said that they were going to be reviewing this whole week so I would give it until the end of the week before i started sweating

CT715: I had my interview in person at the admissions office...Wow an interview with the dean is big, good luck.

HarlemHoney: The name of my interviewer was Matthew...Yea i figured that he might just be taking a little longer...I cant help it i have been nervous ever since my interview...Thanks for your input and congratulations on your acceptance, hopefully i will be in the same boat as you in the next few days.

TDM: Oh okay, Matthew is the associate director of admissions and Kay whom interviewed me is the assistant director of admissions, not sure of the difference in titles i always thought they were a bit synonymous but you never know. But yeah try not to think about it though i know its hard, i nearly drove myself nuts checking my phone and e-mail every day after the interview, but my take is that they must be interested if they even interviewed you. so many people applied way early and are still on a waitlist with no interviews scheduled. Good Luck! and keep us posted

Matthew interviewed me as well. We had the interview over the phone on a friday and he had called me on tuesday to tell me I'd been accepted. The FedEx package was at my house the very next day.

Yeah you're right about the next day fedExing, I called the office of admissions first thing this morning to inquire about how the packet would be sent and i just barely caught my packet before they were going to fedEx it to my home address. I explained to the lady on the phone that since I work during the day no one would be home to accept the package and offered to pick it up today after work , since I get off at 5 and their office stays open until 6 on Wednesdays, so I'm off to Lewisohn this evening

see now I am really starting to get nervous...everyone who interviewed and got in was notified within several days of their interview...It will be a week tomorrow since I was interviewed and still nothing...Im starting to get a bad feeling...

I read somewhere that Fall 2008 applicants should find out final decision by the end of this week. I applied right before the cut off date on June 1st and since I haven't heard anything, I assumed the worst and also I don't think I'm a very strong candidate. However this afternoon, I got a call from admissions to schedule for an interview ASAP. Is anyone else in a similar situation as me? I just thought it was strange since this is the week when all Fall 2008 applicants should find out the decision.

I find this thread extremely helpful since now I know what to expect. I'm meeting with Matthew on Thursday.

I'd appreciate any thoughts!

Well first of all congratulations on the interview, it is a very good sign. So far everybody that I have talked to who had an interview was accepted. I interviewed with Matthew. Very up front guy. Expect him to raise questions about the spotty parts of your record, and have good answers for him. Dont try and just tell him what he wants to hear, be yourself. When i walked out of the interview room I was fairly confident that i had bombed and i would be returning to community college. Low and behold, exactly one week later an admissions packet was waiting at my door. Good luck with the interview and hopefully you too will receive a packet.

TDM323, congrats your acceptance and thanks for your input!
