GS Spring 2013 Applicants

Has anyone heard anything lately?

It’s gotten quiet here lately. I wonder if that means GS already reached their maximum number of acceptances.

:-(

Hang in there, Antika. Unless you’ve gotten a phone call saying that you’ve been admitted, or letter saying otherwise, you are still in the game!

I haven’t heard or received anything either still. I applied October 1. I’m getting a little worried…

Antika and powerstorms, I haven’t heard anything either, I submitted my application November 5th. I was hoping to have heard something by now. But hellojan is right, we’ll just have to wait and see.

…was told that my application is STILL under review. Guess that means even though they haven’t said yes, they don’t want to say no either! Powerstorms and Ditau25, this may be the case for you two as well.

Yes HelloJan, it seems we are still in the game alright :-)

Fingers crossed!

I’ve been waiting and checking multiple times a day to see if I can access the financial aid webpage. I just called a few minutes ago and they seemed reluctant to give me any information. It was like pulling teeth. Needless to say, my application is “still under review.” I do appreciate that the phone goes straight to a person rather than navigating through a phone tree.

For anyone who submitted their application on Nov. 5th.

There was a mix up with my recommendations a week ago, today I received confirmation that it has been resolved. Also it stated that my application is under review and that I should receive a decision during the week of Dec. 15th. Hope this helps out who are still anxious about receiving admissions to Columbia:)

Thanks for the information Deletum. That definitely makes me breathe a sigh of relief! I submitted my application November 5th.

Will keep you all posted:-)

Hi everyone, I missed three calls from an unknown caller. The caller said he had exceptionally good news regarding my application. Then I received an email congratulating me on my acceptance!!!

Now I have to fill out my financials and take out those damn loans…

Congratulations Antika!! I just received my call and acceptance email as well!! I’m stoked!!

Congrats Sean!!! I actually cried (silly, I know). Maybe we will be classmates? I am trying to decide when to attend the Planning Day. I can’t wait to buy my first Columbia sweater, lol. I feel like I should go and buy one tomorrow.

My email originally went to spam. I clicked on “All Mail” in my gmail account and was able to find it then. FedEx might be arriving tomorrow or Monday. Sean, are you living in the city now? I’m in Manhattan, about to move to Inwood in January.

Hi guys, I have been stalking this site for months and was on last night trying to figure out if I will be getting accepted or not. I actually flew across the country on Wednesday and visited the school yesterday in hopes that it would bring me some good luck… and it did! I got my acceptance email tonight! I have to defer until fall (prego with an already amazing little boy) but I’m glad I know I can set up a residence here and start looking for an apartment.

Here are my stats:

 • I applied on the Nov. 5 deadline.
 • 27 years old as of this week.
 • Terrible HS grades, 2.5 I believe. Explained those in the essay, due to absolutely horrible home situation.
 • 4 years in the Marine Corps.
 • Currently a firefighter (5 years) with a 72 hour a week schedule.
 • I volunteer with 2 children’s charities.
 • I am a volunteer crisis counselor for people who witness traumatizing events.
 • I have a heroism award from my county.
 • I am the Department of Defense Hero of the Year.
 • I have about 31 credits with a 3.4 GPA, and explained the low GPA in my additional essay as being due to lack of study time with work and charity and also a major accident I was involved it.

I honestly believe my essay is what got me in since my grades aren’t remarkable at all. I also attended two admissions events last month and kept in contact with the representative. That helped! Keep bugging them so they remember you!

I look forward to meeting all of you soon!

Woohoo!! Another acceptance :-)

Is anyone here going to work FT and attend school PT? I may have to go into work 4 days a week? How are the afternoon/evening classes?

Any weekend courses?

Thanks!

I will be deferring until Fall (baby due in January) and I am currently in Seattle, WA.

I applied on the Nov 7th. extended deadline.
-2.61 high school GPA
-Six years in the Navy with substantial awards/recognition
-3.9 college GPA
-Minimal extra curricular activities
-Essay was between 1400-1500 words
-24 years old
-Submitted a picture of me with an ear to ear smile skydiving for the optional photo

Congratulations to those who made it and good luck to those still waiting to hear!

I meant November 5th.

Congratulations, everyone!

There are some folks who work FT, and take classes PT, and tons who are FT students with PT work.

Columbia’s courses are mostly either Monday & Wednesday, or Tuesday & Thursday. Few classes (basically only languages, and some engineering classes) meet on Fridays. As a result of that, most people I know who have to work significantly end up spending 2 days a week on campus and put all their classes there. There are some evening classes, but it will significantly limit your options and nearly eliminate your ability to choose professors.

You can take a look at the (horrible) [CU Directory of Classes](http://www.columbia.edu/cu/bulletin/uwb/). Find the department you’re interested in, and look at the Spring schedule. For example, I’m an economics student (it’s one of the largest majors at GS). For econ you must first take 4 core classes, each is offered a few times every semester.

 • Principles of Economics (MW at 1:10, TR at 1:10, TR at 4:10)
 • Intermediate Micro (MW 1:10, TR 1:10, MW 11:40, TR 11:40)
 • Intermediate Macro (TR 10:10, MW 8:40AM, TR 10:10)
 • Econometrics (TR 5:40, MW 2:40, MW 4:10)

Every department and semester is different, but that’s a lot of sections and the latest one is a single econometrics at 5:40, followed by another econometrics and a principles at 4:10.

People make part time school work, but you often have to schedule work around classes, not classes around work. Unfortunately what our wonderful dean, Peter Awn, says[/url”>GS Alumni, Students Mingle at Scholarship Dinner - Columbia Spectator]says is true, “We are both inconvenient and very, very expensive.”

Is anyone visiting or going to be at CU in Feb/Mar timeframe?

This question is off topic but I can’t find much of an answer. I am looking at core classes and don’t see a requirement for mathematics unless it’s needed for your major. I plan on majoring in sociology and math isn’t mentioned, am I correct to assume I won’t need any math courses at all? If so, this might be the second happiest day of my life.
