GT or Umich? Please help me out

Hi, everyone!
I am an international student. Recently, I was accepted by both GT and Umich, but I cannot decide which one to attend. I will study engineering, but I don’t know what kind yet (Mechanical? Computer?). I need to pay out-of-state tuition for both schools (GT is about 11 grand cheaper). Weather is not the biggest issue (I have been going to school in Michigan for the past three years), but I do prefer warmer weather so I can play outside. I visited both schools last week, and I liked both. GT’s campus was nicer than I expected, and Umich’s campus was just as beautiful as I heard. Please let me know what you guys think, thanks!!!

If you go to a high school in Michigan for the last 3 years and will graduate from it, you will be eligible for in-state tuition even if you are international. You should check it out as that would make a huge difference.

That’s what I thought but it says I have to go to junior high school in Michigan as well. Unfortunately, I didn’t.

Both are outstanding, you like both, you prefer warmer, and that happens to be 11k cheaper, so what’s the dilemma?

@Chardo You have a good point. I guess the dilemma is that most of the smart kids at my school are going to Umich? And overall, Umich is a better school? What if I end up switching my majors to something like business? Although it’s very unlikely.

@Chardo I guess it’s like going to two restaurants; one with good seafood and it’s a little bit cheaper, one with decent seafood and BBQ but it’s a little bit more expensive. I love seafood, but I might want to eat something different sometimes. But who knows? Maybe I will stick with seafood lol

The smart kids at your school are going to UMich because it’s their best bargain, and a great one at that. That should mean nothing to you. UMich is not any better than GT. They’re both world class schools that will give you every opportunity you seek. In the unlikely event you switch to business, GT is great there too.

Did you apply to MSU? They will give you in-state tuition with 3 years of HS alone. If not you might want to apply for winter term admission. $14K at MSU vs $33K at GT vs $45K at Michigan. It’s not as good as GT or Michigan but the price difference is substantial.

Michigan is a better overall university, with a college town experience, and a 50/50 m/f ratio.
GT is a about the same as Michigan in engineering, with an urban experience, and a 65/35 m/f ratio, an a number of nearby universities like Emory.

Internationally speaking, Michigan has a better reputation, but GT is rising fast.
Both are very rigorous, and you will be stretched as an engineer.

I suppose that it depends on your finances. Will the extra $50K affect your family? If you like them equally, follow your pocketbook.

@Chardo @TooOld4School Thank you guys for your help.
As for my family’s finance, I am the only child so I guess it’s not really the biggest issue. (My parents will pay for everything) But I still think $45K (plus another $12K for living probably) a year is still quite a lot.

I ended up choosing umich; finance isn’t the biggest problem for me. However, I am not 100% going there though. I’m on the waitlist of Bowdoin and Reed, and if they offer me a spot and give me some money, I might go there.
