Georgia Tech or U Michigan Engineering?

Hi, I recently got accepted to Georgia Tech and U Mich, GT for Electrical engineering (although I’m not exactly sure if that’s what I want to pursue), and U Mich undecided. I was wondering which school was better because all the posts I see about these colleges either are different scenarios than me or are outdated. Price is not an issue, I’m just wondering about the benefits of the colleges engineering wise and post school wise, such as how a degree from either looks to an employer. I keep hearing about how much of a hell GT is, and leaning towards UMich, but I am not sure. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!

@buttboy. both great schools GTech is elite in engineering and sciences. uMich is as well but in many other disciplines

For Michigan, are you in the engineering division?

“For Michigan, are you in the engineering division?”

ucbalumnus, it does not matter since any student at the University of Michigan can switch to the CoE as long as they have a 2.0 GPA and have taken the prerequisite Calculus and Physics classes.

“I was wondering which school was better because all the posts I see about these colleges either are different scenarios than me or are outdated.”

Butterboy, GT and Michigan are peers in engineering/CS, but Michigan also excels in all other fields of study. As such, Michigan is a more “balanced” university, and its reach and reputation extend beyond GT’s. If cost is not a concern, I generally recommend Michigan over GT.

https://www.engin.umich.edu/admissions/undergrad/cross-campus-students/admissions/ says that cross campus transfer students to the engineering division need a 2.5 GPA and C or higher grades in the prerequisite engineering courses “to be competitive for admission”. It is not clear whether that means that admission to the engineering division will be granted if those criteria are met, or if it may be more competitive beyond that.

Michigan is great. But a better school of engineering than Georgia tech. That’s not my analysis or general sense of things.

^^^No one stated that Michigan is better than GT in engineering.

Academically and reputationally they are comparable. Both are outstanding and well respected by employers everywhere. Decision comes down to other factors. Campus atmosphere, size, weather (big difference), vibe, etc. Have you visited both?

If you are unsure that you want to study engineering or stem, you should definitely go to Michigan. Michigan has better programs for business and humanities.

Post college reputation - everyone knows GaTech is a great engineering school and will automatically assume you are a great engineer/scientist. That comes with the school name. Here in Texas - Michigan, UVA, UNC, Florida are equivalent and have the same reputation as good schools and most people will say Texas AM is better for engineering… because no one looks at ranking polls.

^ though don’t underestimate GT business. Employers love their tech savvy, math smart grads.

They also consider schools which don’t offer engineering (UNC). Also, UVA is relatively weak in engineering. In other words, who cares what people in a Texas think?
