hello, every friends:

my son have got admit from both GT and UIUC (freshman ) but we fall into trouble to chioise which one is better for him. please help me to do this decision.

They’re both excellent schools that are very comparable academically. Your decision will have to be made on other factors (campus, location, etc.)

Basically what he said. Rank the variables of both schools in order of importance to you and give each one a letter grade after a visit to each.

I hear Illinois is having severe budget troubles. Illinois is cutting $1 billion statewide from the university system. So far, the worst case scenario for Georgia is $385 million with a comparable amount of institutions of higher education. Think about the ramifications of getting over 2.5 times as much money cut from a similar-sized system.

The worst case scenario for Georgia was $385 million in addition to existing cuts (roughly $600 million total).

The Illinois Board of Higher Education has an appropriation of $3.1 billion from state/federal funding. The University System of Georgia has an appropriation of $2.1 billion from state/federal funding. So that’s a 32% cut in Illinois and a 29% cut in Georgia, which isn’t much different.

But, remember: those are worst-case cuts for both school systems. It’s increasingly looking like the USG won’t get near that much cut out next year, and I haven’t been following Illinois to see how their situation is playing out.

But if you’re looking for security, I will point out that Georgia Tech has a $1.1 billion endowment with $1.1 billion in annual operating costs (20,000 students). The University of Illinois has a $1.1 billion endowment with $4.1 billion in annual expenses (70,000 students).

I’m in the same situation but I’m going with UIUC.

Ga Tech location: midtown business district, big city feel.
Illinois location: small college town.

Ga Tech demographic: over 40% OOS + international students. Many of in-states are transplants from the north.
Illinois demographic: Most students are from in-states. Only 18% came from OOS.

Ga Tech degree: Most students major engineering. The rest of students major Management and Science. There is limited of major degrees. Limited if you don’t want to major engineering, science and management. Easy transfer among different colleges.
Illinois degree: A lot more choices if you don’t want to major engineering.

Ga Tech weather: Warm weather.
Illinois: Cold weather.

Ga Tech gender ratio: 2/1 male to female ratio. Has improved a lot of lately. Last class has 33% female student. This year 35% of admitted class are female students. Ga State is next door with 60% female.
Illinois: more balanced ratio since there are a lot of other majors.

Overall, I believe that Ga Tech has slightly better overall students since it attract many top instate students due to Hope Scholarship. Illinois don’t always attract best in state students since it has highest in-state cost among public university. Also, Illinois costs $5000 to $7000 more if you are OOS to both.

which would you rate better for engineering?

They are virtually the same.

hmm for computer engineering, aerospace and nuclear engineering(to be more specific)?.. I saw somewhere its very hard to change your major at UIUC and at the moment I cant really make out which major I want to really pursue. I really like 2-3 and I’d like to know more about them, perhaps study each a bit to really make out.

Of the schools, at Georgia Tech it is easier to move between majors. the first time you switch majors, you just fill out a one-page form. No approvals or authorizations needed in your first few years. After the first major change, it’s still relatively easy to switch majors as long as your GPA is reasonable.

Again, there’s no major difference in programs. For instance, Tech is #2 in U/G AE and UIUC is #7. Some people will tell you that this is a “huge difference”, but in reality, it is not. You’ll have basically the same employers coming to both schools, and graduate schools will consider the schools equal[1].

Really, it’s going to come down to non-academic ranking factors. Which campus do you like better? Which location do you like better? Are either school heavily involved in research that interests you? How do finances work out between the schools? These are the types of factors on which you should base your decision.

[1] You could have something strange happen, like a GT or UIUC alumnus at your intended graduate school that favors GT or UIUC grads, but for all intents and purposes, the schools are equal.

thanks… yeah I’d like to know a bit more about undergrad research facilities at both schools… GP do you know about switching majors at UIUC? Is it very tough, or if your GPA is reasonable enough they let you do it?

I’ve met the same problem. UIUC vs. Wisconsin-Madison, and major is economy. Which one is better?

^out of state? International? Because instate tuition is important if comparing. In state UIUC is still less than out of state UW Madision (though less so than before).

UW Economics is a top 10 dept, Illinois is not.

GP do you happen to know if there are good co-op programs in UIUC like in GTech and how do the undergrad research facilities at both the areas compare?

You should go to the UIUC message board and ask.

I dont think they have anyone as experienced there a couple of times I put some questions out. But yeah it was kinda stupid of me asking you this.

It’s not a problem. I just think they’re better qualified to answer. I’ve only hired there, so my experience is limited. Those who have actually interviewed will have a broader perspective.

thank you all above friends to help me to know more about this two schools.

GT has more money than UIUC on the education. warm weather, better on enginerring, limited major choice exception engineering, lack of girls, easier to move between majors, Lower cost and tuition…

I like this school than before now

thanks again!!!

yes , I have same question on UIUC board.
