guidance counselor

I know that it is important to get a sense of how your guidance counselor will answer such questions that will appear on your application as "How challenging is the student's courseload?" and "How well-respected is the student by faculty members?" However, I am not sure how I should go about addressing this. Should I bluntly ask my GC how she is going to answer these questions, should I ask her indirectly, or should I just avoid discussing this issue altogether?

You can’t change the perception that you’ve earned over your first 3 years in high school, good or bad. They will answer the questions honestly & they are not meant for you to know, you knowing how they will answer is irelevant. Colleges want honesty from the GC’s.

That’s very true. But since my junior year of high school has not yet started, it may give me a sense of what I still need to work on. And I could opt out of marching band and take AP physics instead to increase the rigor of my course load.

If you want a sense of what you need to work on then that is the question you need to ask. Ask your GC if they think you need to take a more challenging course load and if your course work is sufficient given the colleges you are thinking of applying to.

Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you were in the process of aplying to colleges & were contemplating asking your GC how they are goping to anser appl. questions. Asking how you could improve, course rigor, etc. is completely acceptable.

Thanks for your comments. Also, my GPA is not ranked, but I will probably be in the top 2% of my class. My GC is very oblivious to many things, and GPAs are typically not compared between students among counselors. How can I hint to my GC that I have one of the highest GPAs in the grade? It would help a lot if she mentioned that in her rec bc that distinguishes between the top 10% and the very top of the class.

If you’re not ranked, and GCs don’t know your GPA (which seems odd), how is it you know your ranking? GC won’t be able to comment on something they have no access/knowledge of just because you hinted it. Just asking.

My peers and I have compared our GPAs, and I seem to have one of the top two. Also, I can guess at the ranking by the awards our hs offers. Of course, my rank may change. But if I manage to stay at the top, how can I let my GC know?

don’t let your GC know. if neither you nor him/her are meant to know your class rank, then just forget about class rank altogether.
