Guide to an 800: Math Level 2 Long Edition

Hello everyone, this is the 2nd Guide to an 800, but unlike the Chemistry version, I will be making two math level 2 guides, one for those studying for longer period of time and one for those for a shorter period of time. So let me just start off talking about what I thought of the math level 2 test. Its not easy, but its is easy to get an 800. Get what I mean? The curve is like my grandmother, i love it to death. Ok all jokes aside, if your strong at math this is going to be an easy subject test BUT, don't take it lightly and actually study hard so that you can ensure a glorious 800. So lets begin on the guide.

How long do I need to study?

This is the long edition so I would put your studying time at around a month to 2 months. It really depends on how good you are in math, so if you are strong at math and pre calculus then you could shorter this timetable but otherwise I would stick to this length.

What books ?

Oh, the question that drives every student insane. From reading through this forum and actually being in contact with many books I have a strict list for what I think will give the best chance at an 800. Princeton Review should be the first book to buy because I have seen that it is a lot like the actual test and it is a good place to start your math level 2 studying. The only problem I see is that it might be a little easier which is definitely not good in my opinion. If you feel uncomfortable with Pr, then I would suggest using Kaplan, but then again Kaplan is not the best. Next I would buy Barrons, because it provides in my opinion the best review of all the math topics. What I don't like about Barrons is not that its harder than the real test but that its downright ridiculous. The questions are completely absurd at times, and I was kind of mind at Barrons for that. Next book to buy is Dr.Chungs. Ok DISCLAIMER: IF YOU HAVE TO CHOSE ONE BOOK, BUY DR.CHUNGS, IT IS GODSEND FOR THE SAT MATH LEVEL 2. Dr.Chungs was my best friend because it has everything you need to achieve that 800. First its tips at the beginning of the book are really nice because they give you the review of Barrons in a nutshell which is nice. The practice tests are amazing as well, they are harder than the real thing but at the same time very helpful. I actually found them to be quiet realistic because all the hard questions on the June Math Level 2 test were like all the questions of Dr.Chungs. The book is amazing, I loved it and I would highly recommend buying it, its worth the money. If you still want more practice then buy 15 realistic tests for the Sat Math Level 2, but I wouldn't recommend this as much because its very unrealistic (THE TITLE LIED :O)

Schedule

Start off by reviewing all the major math topics you need to know. If you are not the strongest math student, use Barrons because its a little bit more in depth. If you are a strong math student use Dr.Chungs to quickly go over the major topics. Now if you find yourself reteaching yourself a topic. STOP. Go to your Pre Calculus textbook, or find one online and learn the topic from there because prep companies are making review books not books where your learning a fresh new topic. After you have reviewed its time to practice. Start with Pr, do those tests and after your done go to Dr.Chungs tests. When you take these tests it is important to review your mistakes and you should review every questions so thoroughly that if you were to take the test again in a month, you would get an 800. Again if you find yourself unsure of a topic when your taking a test, go to that holy grail called your textbook and learn it. If you want to do barrons tests, go ahead but again I felt they weren't as helpful as I thought they would be. Now its a week to go and you should have completed all your tests. If you have been reviewing well then you should be getting 800s on Dr.Chungs if not very close. If your not, don't worry the real test is much easier. Now with this week do the sparknotes tests because in my opinion they are a hard real test. The june test was almost similar to the sparknotes test I took and I found them to be good indicators of your actual score. So its friday, you are totally ready for the October test, so relax.

Final Words

I will make a quicker version for Math Level 2 later but for now follow my advice on this thread. Remember practice makes perfect, so work hard and I guarantee your going to see an 800 on your score report.

Sincerely

sjsharks

this is a very informative and awesome guide. For your short one, could you add links to prac tests and also give us a timeline about when to study when to take prac tests?

What do you think 620 to 660 on dr.chungs book translates to on the real thing? (thats what i’ve been getting btw)

bump
thanks sjsharks! your guides are so helpful

What topics did you find most challenging on the real SAT math 2 test?

Just wondering if you have already made the short edition of this guide as well. If not please do! And thanks very much for this
