Does anyone have any experience with Guilford? We are doing a swing of NC colleges with my aunt (who lives in Raleigh) soon, and Guilford is on the list, as are UNc Asheville, UNC Greensboro and possibly App. State.

I am also very interested in Earlham, and since my mom is iffy about the distance, she thinks Guilford would be a good compromise.

Really pretty campus; very nice students; private, originally Quaker, and obviously smaller than the publics on your list. Worth checking out, though, if you're looking at UNC-G, too. Not a difficult admit, but a really nice school.

Looked at it with then junior son in spring of 2002 and wrote a review here on CC. Small, diverse, allowed/encouraged overnight the night before the formal visit.
Ultimately, did not apply.

Guilford and Earlham have very similar student populations. Check out the nice discussion about Guilford in Loren Pope's book Colleges that Change Lives. Faculty are very much involved in student lives (according to a neighbor whose son goes there) and there is a real sense of community. On the downside, some students feel it is too small and that students know each other too well.
With UNC-G, you may want to check out the Warren Ashby Residential College program. D has a friend she met at NC Governor's School that is now in this program and loves it. It is basically a "college within a college" offered for the freshman and sophomore years. The students in this program are strong academically and offered more individual contact from faculty (faculty teach seminars in the dorm and frequently take part in special meals/activities with the students in this program). D's friend feels it offers many of the benefits of a small LAC college.
