Hey everyone-

I'm a classical guitarist from the Northeast, and I want to know of any guitar competitions, as I just cant seem to find any. I'm rather skilled, and recently I've had a HUGE interest in flamenco and I'm recording my own CD in a little while. Anyway, if anyone has heard of any classical, flamenco, or ANY type of guitar competition in the Northeast area, please please post here!

Hi, try this link, I believe they have some junior competitions although the deadline for the upcoming one has passed. But looks to be geared towards classical. Don't know anything about the organization, just found it when looking at some other guitar sites.

Good luck!

Guitar Foundation of America | America's Leading Guitar Organization

I would also look for string competitions. Many times, they'll allow a guitar as well as the usual violin, cellos, etc.

So I searched for the past half an hour or so and came up with this:

New York State Solo Competition
Boston GuitarFest
CT ATSA Solo Competition
GFA Young Artist Competition
GFA Young Artist Showcase

If there are any other classical guitarists out there (or anyone just willing to lend a hand), can anyone help me in compiling a decent list? =P And thanks for the GFA recommendation!

Not knowing your age or educational level, I'll throw out a couple of potential places to look.

Many orchestras, local, regional and major offer competitions/scholarships. They may be at a couple of different levels.

Many will offer competitions geared to the high school aged student, and usually award the prize as a scholarship for undergrad study.

Some local music societies will fund competitions as well.

There symphony/orchestra competitions that are at the "next" level, for college/conservatory undergrad, grad students, pre or emerging professional players.

I haven't found an easy way to isolate or search for these via google. From our experience, it's usually found through announcement or one liner in instrument specific publications. If you are near or attending a good music college or conservatory, go in and read the music department or instrument specific bulletin boards. There are usually tons of various festival, competition, grad fellowship announcements.

IU/Jacobs's website used to have a webpage with summer programs, competitions... you may have to search the site for it, as my link that was bookmarked is non-working. It may have been renamed or moved.

If you're studying privately, talk to your instructor, or peers.

Thanks a bunch, violadad. Very helpful post.
