The shooter was a 19-year-old, sophomore math major. How sad.

I also remember the '66 tower sniper. Sad this was a UT student. They are reporting now no second suspect being investigated further.

Just heard this on the news. So sad all the way around. So sad for the student but glad no one else was hurt.

And artloversplus-
You are getting your US history mixed up. You probably meant Va Tech, not Kent State. The Kent State shooting of 40 years ago involved a shooting by the national guard. UT Austin had its own awful shooting, 44 yrs ago, also by a student, from the observation deck of the University clocktower. Thats what immediately came to mind. So glad everyone’s children are safe.

*** OMG mainelonghorn-- I just saw your post. That must have been horrible! How old were you when the shooting occurred?? Your dad is there again, at the time of this shooting? And your s too?? So scary. Glad all is ok.

I thought it was '65, but I see that '66 is correct, so I had just turned 4. My dad was a 28-year-old engineering professor. Now he’s 73! It’s hard to believe he was there for both incidents. I think he still can’t believe that Charles Whitman could do what he did - Dad said he was very sharp and always really pleasant to be around. This shooter was also smart - graduated 7th from Crockett High School in Austin. I hope they find out how he obtained an AK-47.

I’ve been very impressed with the University’s response, and how well all the police agencies worked together. My son said he’s fine - he doesn’t seem shaken up, but he probably wouldn’t tell me if he were!

No, jym, Kent State was the first thought came to my mind and so was the comment. At the time, I did not know if it is outsider or a student.

When Kent State happened, I was in an overseas HS and color TV was just started. The image from the TV at Kent State gave me a longer lasting impression than anything else. GT shooting did not scare me as I have already went through many more human tragedies than I can count. At the GT shooting I was more concerned with my nephew who was a young professor and lived next to the first shooting scene.

What GT shooting? What are you talking about now?

As sad as this shooting was, it has noting in common with the Kent state shooting. Nothing. Thank heavens.
