"There may be an Asian male armed with two tan shotguns near Rec Sports, according to UT text alerts. UTPD received the call at 6 p.m" This was published today by the daily Texan. I heard gun shot accidents happend before at UT, and now this one!

Calm down it was just a replica…

scary though especially after other things that have happened in the past.

good thing is, students get texts asap about these things. I guess with a student body of ~50k, there’s bound to be issues like this unfortunately. Glad this guy wasn’t troubled, but WHY would you be stupid enough to carry replica guns around campus?? that’s not only incredibly stupid, but also a terrible thing to worry all the faculty/students/parents/etc. ugh

Shootings at UT have only happened twice I think. (happened in 1966 from the tower when lots of people were hurt/killed and then last year when no one was)…though it shouldn’t happen at all, I don’t think it needs to be a huge concern.

Unfortunately, you need to be aware if youre considering UT.
There are few cops.
Frequent fights, jumping, and shooting at local clubs.

It is not very safe. You have to know how to take care of yourself in case of emergency.

I do not mean to scare you. I am simply repeating what my brother told me after he lived there fore four years. Ill be attending UT though

The campus is well patrolled. You can subscribe to an email that summarizes the campus police logs every day. Unsecured bicycles are stolen and electronic equipment that was left on a bench or desk are picked up. Non UT scammers walking through buildings looking for stuff to steal are escorted off the campus. I think the campus is pretty darn safe. There are people out and about pretty much 24/7, especially on weekends. Not many “deserted” areas that seem scary.

I’m sure there are some local clubs in every city where there are frequent fights. I wouldn’t hold that against UT, and I’d avoid these particular clubs!

I definitely feel safe on campus and have been out and about at all times of the night without any problems. It’s probably wise to avoid Guadalupe after a certain hour, but hey, what would you expect from a campus located in the downtown area of a fairly large city? Also, Austin as a whole has a very low crime rate for a city of its size. I’ve yet to hear of these “frequent fights, jumpings and shootings” and if they’re happening at clubs then that’s hardly UT’s fault. (There aren’t even any clubs near campus anyway.)

The main thing I’ve learned from reading the UT police reports is that you CANNOT put stuff down unsupervised! Students will leave their bags on the bleachers while they’re playing basketball, and they disappear.

The police also recommend that you lock your bikes with TWO different kinds of locks - a cable as well as a U-shaped lock. I’ve noticed that even bikes worth very little are taken, so don’t assume your bike is safe just because it looks inexpensive.

I would recommend that women NOT walk alone across campus after dark. My sister and I both had scary incidents happen to us, and that was 30 years ago! A guy exposed myself to my sister as she walked to her car in the parking lot of SRD. He grabbed for her, then she screamed and he ran off.

One time, I was playing video games at the Union. It was towards the end of final exams, and there weren’t many students left. A seemingly nice guy started talking to me. He offered to walk me back to SRD since the campus was so empty. I said OK, and on the way back he put his arm around me and forcefully tried to kiss me, right in front of my dorm! It was very scary. Fortunately, some girls came out the front door and he left. So just use some common sense! Guys who seem “nice” might not be.

^Okay, let me rephrase that – campus is safe if you’re a tall male with a semi-threatening appearance as I am. Haha.

ugh what is with guys like that?! that kind of scares me!!
