Daughter just called. Alert issued. Campus locked down.

In the Perry Castaneda library.

These posts always give me goosebumps. Hoping for a good outcome for everyone there.

Sounds like it’s over. A man with an AK-47 was in the Perry-Casteneda Library, but he apparently shot himself. No one is being treated by EMS. This is all from local news …

Hate this stuff.

Prayers.

My son was in his dorm directly across from the library. Of course, to the kids it’s exciting - I told him to stay put! He’s supposed to call me when it’s over, but I haven’t heard from him yet. I think I will call him now!

These are horrific situations. (not to mention, why does anyone need an AK47???)

CC is great though…this alert was posted here before it appeared on ANY news stories on the internet. It’s there now but it was here first.

Wow…hoping not a Kent State again…

The gunman shot himself and apparently died at the scene. Police are looking for a potential 2nd suspect because witness descriptions of the gunman were so different. No reports of anyone else shot.

KXAN is reporting that the first gunman did indeed shoot himself, but the second one still hasn’t been able to be found yet.

D is in lockdown in a classroom…they have been told that they will have to stay there until it is confirmed that there is not a second suspect…D is VERY freaked out!! Please pray for UT!

There is a live stream of video here of the ABC affiliate, if you click on the link to the right: [Austin news, sports, weather, Longhorns, business | Statesman.com](http://www.statesman.com/)

My son just seemed to think it was all very exciting. Sigh.

The sniper in the '65 Tower shooting was one of my dad’s students. I was three when it happened. I was old enough to know that something bad was going on, but my mom told me that Dad wasn’t in town that day, so I knew he was safe.

My dad is in the civil engineering building, which is on the far side of campus. I know they’ll be OK, but I can’t believe my son and my father are both there!

YDS, thanks for the link. Fox and CNN don’t know much.

This from the latest on the UT Emergency Information board:

September 28, 2010 at 10:01 am

The university is closed.

A suspected shooter in PCL library is dead. Law enforcement are searching for a second suspect. If you are off campus, STAY AWAY. If you are on campus, lock doors, do not leave your building.

I’m sorry for those of you with relatives at the school as the situation is stressful and I hope it is all resolved quickly.

That is a clear, but depressing message. For those of you with family members in the area, my thoughts are with you - even if they are safe, what anguish!

Lock-down has been lifted, but the investigation is continuing.

It is great to see the emergency text alert system seems to have worked well to communicate warning/safety information to students and employees.

May everyone remain safe.

Thanks for sharing that historical tidbit, MaineLonghorn. I hope your dad and others who lived through the Whitman tragedy do not suffer a recurrence of emotional distress triggered by today’s incident.

UT is my alma mater. I got a big lump in my throat when I heard about this. I listened to an interview with a law school prof who pulled up to an intersection at 21st and something, only to see this person wearing a ski mask, toting an AK-47 type firearm, and running and shooting indiscriminately. He said the shooter made brief eye contact, then shot several times off to the side, more towards the ground. The prof felt that he had ample opportunity to kill people but did not. Sounds like he intended to scare rather than murder while committing suicide. However, not all facts are known. He has been identified by name.
