About the lack of attractive girls, that is. While this is something that is widely rumored--true or not--it has been proven false. If anyone else is watching 24 right now, you'll notice that there is this absolutely gorgeous new computer person at CTU who revealed--as a preface to an insight that should save 200,000 lives--that she was a chem major at Caltech!!

OK, um, long story short, they mentioned Caltech in 24 (this isn't the first time, either) and I just found that totally awesome :)

"24" never has and never will film on Caltech campus. Although it would definitely be cool if we had an awesome television series film on our campus instead of the god-awful muck that is "Numb3rs".

Haha, that made my day too. She was really, really hot... plus, coming from Caltech, obviously intelligent. Too bad she turned out to be a bit of a nutcase. And then there's the fictional part...

Numb3rs may film here, but they definitely don't use real students in the background. You can tell because all the students they use 1) look like they just stepped out of an American Eagle catalog, 2) are usually inappropriately dressed for the weather, 3) carry HUGE backpacks, and 4) wear shoes.

People walk around Caltech barefoot? That's awesome!! I live in Florida and I'd like to walk around barefoot but most people don't do it here (keep in mind I live in Orlando so not on the coast / beaches)

Hmm...on that note, has anyone here (besides Kim) heard of Ottmar Liebert? He's always barefoot when playing concerts, it's very cool. I like the barefoot thing, personally--a plus for Caltech :)

I saw that on 24 too- so awesome, especially since if I enroll at Caltech, I'll probably be a chem major.

And in the spirit of Pacific Tech... how close is that movie (Real Genius, for those not in the know) to actual life at Caltech? For instance, is it true chem majors can get free liquid nitrogen from the stockrooms? Are there steam tunnels that can be accessed by students? Are there some students that invent things just for kicks or because they never sleep?

In order:
Not anymore, you need to have a reason for it and approval from someone, and I'm pretty sure they charge for it.
Yes.
Invent? I guess. Lots of people build/program/design stuff for the hell of it. Not sure how much of it leads to patentable creations, though.

Definite yes on the tunnels. LN2 is pretty easy to get but not free. Lots of people do weird stuff in their spare time but many people have "normal" fun too.
