GW 7yr BA/MD

If you have been accepted into GW's 7 year BA/MD program and are trying to decide between this program and some other option, I am posting to let you know that my son who is in the GW program has indicated that he will be more than willing to offer you information or other advice to guide you in this decision.

He went through a lot of soul-searching before accepting the slot he was offered as compared to a couple of other attractive options and in the end it was the feedback that he received from a couple of students who were already in the program at GW that helped him to make the decision to accept the offer from GW.

He has never regretted it.

He - or any other student who is already in the progam - would be best able to provide insight into the experience at GW but here are a few comments that have come from him based on various conversations that I have had with him over the past year or so:

The burden of not having to apply to medical school, sit the MCAT, etc cannot be overemphasized and has made his undergraduate experience all the more enjoyable.

There are lots of options to take courses that have little or nothing to do with what he would need as core requirements for medical school. He has found this to be very positive.

The academic demands are not overly taxing. He - and others who are in the program - find that they are able to cope with the curriculum without too much stress. This is not altogether surprising given that the students accepted in the program are obviously high achievers academically.

DC is a fantastic place for a multitude of activities and social life which most GW students avail of fully.

He is very glad that he made the decision to accept the offer from GW - although he struggled with what to do at the time when he was confronted with the decision.

GW is my first choice, so hopefully I'll hear something from them on Monday...

IncompleteAlibi, I do not know when the BA/MD response is coming. I received the GWU undegrad e-mail but it was just the generic acceptance e-mail. I'm assuming that the acceptance in mail will explicate on this issue. So yeah, <onday I'm hoping too.

optimisticdad. Read your posting with interest. Thanks. My son is waiting to hear from GW. From all indications, it looks like this program is a winner. If he gets accepted I'll post to you again. Again, thanks for the info you submitted.

bjjacohen, glad to help.

I know from experience the angst that our kids - and their parents go through - especially when they are fortunate enough to have several attractive choices.

For those who have asked about stats: if memory serves me right, there were over 600 applicants last year to GW's BA/MD program and I believe 18 finally enrolled. I am not sure how many were made offers. The limited slots in the program combined with the large number of applicants makes it very competitive.

Also, as you consider the cost of the program, keep in mind that the all BA/MD students do receive a scholarship of $15K annually- and the fees are fixed for the entire 7 years. In the case of my son, this resulted in his tuition being $30K annually which means that by the time he graduates, the total would be $210K - not a small amount but if you examine the cost at other medical schools, it is actually a pretty good deal. For example, UVA's med school charges over $28K currently to in-state applicants and it goes up every year.

GW's med school will offer excellent exposure from a clinical standpoint through its medical center. If one's focus is on the research side, then perhaps there may be better options.

I just got my letter from GWU today and I was accepted! good luck to all the other applicants!

j567p, you going to GW?

not sure yet, I'm still waiting on UMDNJ but after UMDNJ is GW on my list

We got package from GW yesterday and my son got in. Although other offers came in from BA/MD programs (Drexel and Albany Med) and he got "regular" acceptances from Cornell and Colgate, he'll more than likely be attending GW.

bjjacohen, congrats to your son! He is in an enviable position with those choices!!

I got my financial aid packet today:

Fixed Tuition and Fees Rate: $48,500

What housing are you guys choosing? I think Lafayette is supposed to be good.

Hey is there url for GW ba/md program so i can find more information?

VERY COMPETITIVE PROGRAM!!! Out of the 700+ applicants, only 25 or so are accepted. Make sure you apply to as many combined degree programs as possible.

how many should i apply- like the average number of ba/md programs to apply to. How many did u apply to sickofflorida

I applied to 9-PSU/Jefferson, UMDNJ, Temple, Drexel, Stony Brook, UConn, Brown PLME, Rensselaer, And GW. 3 interviews at Drexel, Albany Medical Center, and New Jersey Medical School. Only 1 acceptance-Rensselaer/AMC. I wish I lived in New Jersey.

i know the question was directed towards sickofflorida, but i thought i'd put my two cents in..
