GW,Gettysburg or U Delaware honors

I sm so confused. Please give me your advise on which school is better in terms of academics and socially. Help. I would relly appreciate it.

What's your major?
Gettysburg: great personal attention, academics, rural atomosphere, nice buildings, small classes etc.
UD Honors: heard mixed stories from people who go there in honors program
GW: in the heart of it all...busy, bustling
What are you looking for--for overall campus feel..all choices are quite different...

Thanks for your feedback. I like all of them. BUt, I do want a good edcuation as well as a good social life. I am not real athletic. I like cities and also the country. I am very social and enjoy meeting new people. ANy more feedback would be great.

I do not konw what I will be majoring in as of yet, although I do have an interest in psychology....

From a parent standpoint; is one more "affordable" than the other? Which is the size of school you prefer? You say you like the country and the city? Which do you live in now? Do you like the environment you live in now? Will the honors program at UD challenge you more than the "regular" programs at Gettysburg and/or GW? Is one "closer" to your home (I realize they're all pretty close geographically) that will allow you to go home as you please? Are there people you know at either of the schools, now or attending with you? Those are my thoughts to ponder.

Thaks for your reply. Money is not an issue. I like the feel of all three. Which school is better academically and socially. I live in NY so all three schools are between 3-5 hours at home. What are t hae kids and dorms like at GW????I worry that they are all really verywealthy and snobby, but I do love DC

Meadesport: I was also accepted to Gettysburg and U Delaware honors along with several others. I live in New York as well and have decided to attend GW. I spent several weeks this past summer taking a course in D.C. and loved the vitality of the city and the individuals that I met at GW. I also have several friends that attend GW and love it.
GW has an great reputation for poli sci and international affairs studies and I believe it will increase my chances of securing a good internship. I am not as concerned about the "snob" aspect because I believe that you will gravitate to those individuals that are "like yourself".
Gettysburg is a beautiful school but I hear that there is a lot of focus on athletics and not much to do in the town. U. Delaware is also nice but in my opinion, cannot compare to GW

Academically it is important to know the benefits of UDel's Honors Program/College as well as your intended area of study before making suggestions as to which might be better for you. Socially, Gettysburg revolves around fraternity life while George Washington University may be centered around the offerings of Washington D.C.

Thanks so much for your input. It is all very helpful... I too think I am leaning towards GW. Tell me a bit about Delaware...If you know about it. Or at least the honors program. Your feedback has been very helpful..What about dorms.. I am social, but like to get my sleep

I have a son who is a freshman at UD in the honors program. They put honors freshmen together (but mixed in with non-honors, too). Most of the students on his floor are friends and socialize together, yet he does all his studying in his room and that has not been a problem for him at all.

UD's honors program is very well regarded. I found this at another site:

Best Honor program (for public universities)
1) University of Delaware (DE)
2) University of Michigan-Arbor (MI)
3) University of Oklahoma (OK)

So far he has had quite a few opportunities at UD - an undergraduate research position, assistance through career services to obtain a paid internship for the summer (he actually got 2 offers), & additional academic counseling through the honors program. The professors are surprisingly accessible for the size of the college and have been quite helpful and available.

We also had a close family friend whose son attended GW and graduated with a degree in international affairs. He loved it there, especially being in DC.

Good luck with your choice!

I forgot to mention the dorms. There are many different types, from the traditional older dorms to new ones. Russell A & B were gutted this year and will be ready for the fall. One brand new dorm will open in the fall, too. My son lives in Russell D, which is an older dorm, but ideally located. Friends from his high school thought it was big, but that must be relative, because I think it is average in size.

Thanks for your help. Iheard that Russell will be renovataed and not ready for the honors students in the fall. What about the housing at GW?

Most freshman at GW get into Thurston, whether they choose it or not. Large old dorm, large rooms mostly 4 or more to a room bathroom in each room. Noisy. My S could only study in the basement or the library, never in his room. Usually had to walk into the building through the smokers, smoke drifted up to his open windowed room. Despite saying he was not a partier (not a loner, quite type either) 2 of 3 roomates in his quad were partiers with alcohol and drug (dope only) use.

Is he happy there? How do they let smoking in the dorms?

Smoking is not allowed in any of the dorms. I think gwfreshmom was referring to people smoking on the street outside the building and the smoke rising up to the window of her child's dorm room. Actually, smoking is not allowed outside the dorms either, within a certain number of feet of the buildings. Of course, there are always people who break the rules. My D had a very different experience than gwfreshmom's S. She was not in Thurston freshman year. She is not a partier and wanted no part of it. She was in a beautiful double that shared a bathroom with another double. At that time, the earlier you got your deposit in the better chance you had of getting your preferred room assignment as a freshman. I'm not sure if that's still true. It's also a good idea if you are not a partier to look for like-minded students at CI and plan to room with them.

Russell A & B will be ready for the fall. My son said they are finished now and they are landscaping. However, they will be upperclass housing next year. The other Russells will be closed for renovation next year. I believe the Honors freshmen will be in Harrington next year. They have the same room layouts, which my son preferred. You can look on the UD website to see a room layout. The room is 2 rectangles which are offset from each other. Son & roommate set up the 2 sections with the back area with loft beds and desks underneath. Then the front area became a sitting area with 2 chairs, floor lamp and TV stand. It actually is a nice arrangement.

What is better GW, U Del Honors, Gettysburg or Villanova?

researchmaven is correct; I was referring to people smoking on the street outside the building.

Meadesport- that is a hard decision, my son is also deciding on GW, Boston College and UDel.
He is premed and very interested in being in/near a city so he has almost eliminated UDel.
He wants a diverse campus and I think he will only find that at GW not BC, but we are going back to visit both and decide.
UDel has great study abroad programs during the month of Jan. that students even as freshman can take advantage of and they have new high rise dorms!

One thing to keep in mind regarding UD's location. You can get a train right in Newark and go to DC, Philly, NYC, etc. But if you really want to be in the middle of a big city, then UD is not for you.
