Haas(ucb) transfers?

do we have any haas transfers on this board? i am really confused and i dont know how to gauge the selectivity of this school. i know its REALLY selective-but seriously can anyone clarify what's going on? what they look at, what they're interested in mostly..like ACTUAL advice as opposed to **** you find from websites. thanks.

oh, and this can also be a thread for people applying to haas this year.woot.

They are very strict about their admission policies. I was planning on applying to haas but due to some family issues, i took some time off and now they said they won't accept major course grades that are five years or older at the date of admission; applied as an econ major...

oh yah, and they accept roughly 30 transfer students (from ccc) for an admit rate of 8% ! I'd say even with a 4.0, ec's, volunteer work, and a great resume (i dont know if they still require rec's) it'd be a gamble.

I was with the transfer director (like head transfer counselor) at my school and he called the Haas Admissions Office and he gave the phone to me after he asked some questions himself.

I specifically remember two things the admissions officer said:
(1) The 8% figure is a bit misleading as almost half of all applicants do not fill out the form completely or do not meet the required courses (articulated at assist.org)

(2) If I get into UCB as an econ major I could apply that year to Haas but I'd be at a significant disadvantage as most of my grades would've been from CC, whereas students with a lower gpa who enrolled as a freshman would have a higher shot. He said it's not impossible, but he kept repeating "significant disadvantage." :o ...

Anyways, hope that helps and hope I get in as an econ major (it's still not guaranteed even with my 3.94 & 73 units) :D

I've heard similar information. I'm a business management economics student at UC Santa Cruz with a 4.0 and I'm not seriously thinking I'll be admitted at this point. Overally, it's a little discouraging to know that even with the best grades possible admission isn't automatic, but that's what makes the program so prestigious. It's selective and being admitted is a great achievement.

wow two responses and we've got 36 or somtehing on the H-Y threads? come on guys. there's GOT to be more then this.

Haas is over-rated and seems to accept a lot of sub-par students. (This is non-transfer though.) Just get into a kick-ass MBA program and you will be fine.

Undergraduate business degrees really don't mean anything; it's your grad school that matters. So don't worry.

so i can (for example) go to UCSD for 4 years, major in international studies....get a ba and then apply to Haas to get my mba?????

sure, but I believe the Haas MBA program is not ranked as high as the undergrad program

I applied to Haas last year as a community college stransfer. I made it to the second round (in other words, I submitted the supplementary application in March). From what I have hear, half the of the transfer applicants who submit the supplementary application are accpeted. I was not. Another girl from my community college made was accepted to Haas during the same application period. Also, a woman accepted from my community college to Haas the the year before I applied mentored me. During the time when I was applying, I encountered maybe 10-15 Haas applicants on this board. Most of them, like me, were not accepted. In fact, I can only remember two that were. Haas really is a gamble because it is so selective that many qualified applicants do not make it.

:( i applied to Haas knowing that my chances at getting in is about nil. Where did you end up CC Student?

I go to UCLA. I was accepted as pre-bizecon here, but I am just regular econ now. Have you received a supplementary application? I remember that the deadline for submitting it to Haas was March 28.

i completed the supplementary application already (the one with the essay and resume right?) I think the deadline was around Feb...

I also applied to UCLA (biz-econ) USC (marshall) UCSD (econ) ... i really want to go to ucla or usc. I already ruled Cal out lol.

Good that you completed the supplementary application.

Good mix of schools, and depending on your stats you may have a very good shot at UCLA and USC. I was accepted at both, but chose UCLA (less expensive, better overall reputation, nice area of LA, junior standing-USC gave me sophomore standing, etc.). If you have any questions about UCLA or UCLA econ, I would be glad to answer them. By the way, from where are you transferring?

UCR - that's why i didn't pick any safeties hehe. Anyways, how are the classes for econ? I heard they weren't so bad after you get through with the weeder classes. Did you get on campus housing? also, how is the career center? The career center are UCR is very lacking, i'm working my butt off trying to get a summer internship.

Basically, that is the case. They are generally easier after the weeder classes. Also, you have more options on what you want to take after the weeders, so that is nice as well. You will definitely have the option of on-campus housing. I think most transfers end up in the dorm called Hedrick Summit, so there you would be surrounded by other transfers. UCLA also has suites and other options on-campus. But, with on-campus housing it is unlikely that you will receive parking. UCLA also has university apartments that are near the campus (situated by the dorms) and another off-campus housing option, the Hilgard Houses. The Hilgard Houses are located on Hilgard Ave. aka Sorority Row and are located closer some of North campus (Social Science majors) then the dorms are.

I am not very familiar with the career center at UCLA, but there are many on-campus job opportunities if you have work-study. I don't. I used the career center's online search system to find a year-long internship (which I am working on this year). Very nice opportunity for me as my boss is very chill (let's me miss days for school or other commitments). Also, my internship pays $10 an hour, plus free lunch and if I only come in for the afternoon sometimes free dinner. If that doesn't work, Craigslist is fairly good for finding internships in the LA area. Also, there is a internship function in my.ucla, which is like your personal UCLA homepage, but I am not sure how that works.
