I am very interested in applying to Haas but I am concerned that I don't have the right kind of work experience that they are looking for. I'm 24, and have worked since I was 16. Smoothie place for two years, insurance brokerage place for 8 months, military for 4 years and now at a hotel for 3 years. My schedule doesn't really have room for clubs or internships as it is, I work all night, school all morning to early afternoon and sleep for a while before doing it all over again.
I know I want Berkeley and I would love to apply to Haas but given my work experience should I apply to a different major that interests me?

no, relevant work experience isnt necessary. I worked full time for a few years before going back to CC and I got into Haas. Just relate your experiences to something they would value. Working all night and school all morning with your military background puts you in a special position to tell a story in your app. Specifically talking about your work experience and applying to Haas, it shouldn’t be a problem.

i will say though, once you get here it may hurt you. Recruiting starts right when you enter(depending on intended career) here so be wary of that.

You’re fine. Remember you’ll be going against CC students with ZERO work experience. Having said that, it will be important to show them something unique about your work experiences in your personal statements. Don’t discount yourself! Also, your military experience and your age should be a huge plus.

Not sure what MeStudyStuff meant when he said it could hurt you once you got here. It’s true you need to hit the floor running with recruiting once admitted, but you can use your military experience to sh** on others. The 2014 class is a hodgepodge of experiences and backgrounds. You’ll be fine. GO FOR IT! You can PM me if you have further questions.

You’re right dnoland332, hurt is wrong of me to say. Rather, it should be getting career-related experience now before you transfer would put you in a MUCH better spot during recruiting time than if you didn’t have that related experience.
