Can anyone help?

1989 in basketball I think. A few in baseball.

Michigan has won many National Championships. It is the only university in the country to have won national championships in the four major sports and is widely considered to be one of the top 5 programs historically in Football and Hockey:

Baseball (2 championship):
1953
1962

According to NCAA record books, Michigan claims 11 national championships, I am not gonna go through them but notable errors are:

1964 - Alabama/Notre Dame

1973 - Alabama/Notre Dame

Also, you could make a strong argument for top 5 historically, but it is not widely considered because so many programs can lay claim to that, including:

Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas, Ohio State, Alabama, Penn State. Most of these programs have also done more than Michigan since post-WWII.

Michigan has won National Championships is several other sports:

Swimming (18 championships)
1928
1931
1932
1934
1935
1936
1937
1938
1939
1940
1941
1948
1957
1958
1959
1961
1995

Tom Dolan (6 Gold Olympic medals) and Michael Phelps (14 Gold Olympic medals) are both Michigan alums, although Phelps never competed for Michigan because he had already competed in professional events while he was in high school.

Men’s Gymnastics (4 championships:
1963
1970
1999
2010

Women’s sports have not been nearly as successful, although they have won national championships in Field Hockey, Rowing and Softball.

Also, women’s Gymnastics never won a national championship, but they are always very good (and fun to watch
).

Bearcats, there are obviously going to be many points of views regarding which football programs at the best, but it is hard to argue against Michigan being a top 5 program, considering that it has:

The best overall winning record

1 Michigan 0.733

2 Notre Dame 0.732

3 Ohio State 0.716

4 Oklahoma 0.715

4 Texas 0.715

6 Alabama 0.707

7 Nebraska 0.704

8 Southern California 0.702

9 Penn State 0.690

9 Tennessee 0.690

The most overall wins

1 Michigan 884

2 Texas 850

3 Nebraska 847

4 Notre Dame 845

5 Ohio State 819

5 Penn state 819

7 Oklahoma 809

8 Alabama 802

9 Tennessee 789

10 Southern California 769

A winning record against Notre Dame (23-15-1), Alabama (2-1), Nebraska (3-2-1), Ohio State (57-44-6) and Penn State (10-6). Among the major programs that we have played at least 3 times, only USC has a winning record against Michigan (4-6), but it is important to note that all of those games were played in Pasadena, giving USC a significant advantage.

I cannot see how OSU and PSU can make a legitimate claim over Michigan when Michigan has won more conference titles and head-to-head face-offs.
