Let’s talk about weird hair growth or changes in texture or curliness.
I’ve had fine very straight blond/dirty blond hair most of my life until it turned gray. When I was in my thirties, there was a short period where I had dark thick moderately curly hairs sprouting out of my head, and those short dark hairs stuck out like a halo around my head and looked ridiculous. I pulled a sample of both types of hairs out of my head and the difference was like night and day.
Then, in my fifties when I started going gray, my hair started becoming curly. I can now go to bed with wet hair and get up the next day looking like orphan Annie in her old age. I don’t mind it, but the curliness isn’t consistent, and one side may have ringlets some days while the other is almost straight. I wish that all of my hair had the same level of curliness, then maybe I could rock some curly styles, but I usually just put it in a pony tail or bun at home, and straighten it if .I want to go out looking put together.
Even more weird, is that my daughter, who is Chinese, has a long fine blond hair that grows out of her abdomen. It can get up to 4 inches long! She thinks it’s awesome and nurtures its growth. We were at the beach a couple of weeks ago and she later asked me if I had noticed her belly hair billowing in the wind. I just died. I googled the phenomenon and found out it’s a genetic mutation of the hair follicle. There was an article I found in my search written by a woman who had a similar hair and she described it similarly as billowing in a breeze. My daughter was upset that her weird hair experience wasn’t unique, lol.
Anyone else’s hair have these strange changes over time? I’ve read that hair can get luxurious during pregnancy, but returns to normal afterwards.
My hair was thick and straight until I had children and then became curly. Since menopause, it’s gotten less curly in spots. The back of my head and underside is super curly but the top pieces are straight! Makes me crazy!
And I lost a bunch of hair in 2020 but it’s finally all grown back. My stylist said it’s was covid hair loss but who knows.
Same here! I had a lot of fine, straight hair (think Marcia Brady) until after pregnancy. Since then, I have more texture and beach waves, which I blew out for years because I had no idea how to style curly hair. During covid I had no reason to spend time styling so started wearing it naturally most of the time. I’ve finally embraced the curls and have figured out some products that enhance the curl and cut down on any frizz. It can still be a bit of hit and miss with achieving the look I want so I do still style it straight sometimes.
Have yet to see if menopause changes it up again. Geez Louise. I thought I’d finally figured it out.
Hair loss is common after illness, especially febrile ones. Also happens with big surgeries or other physical or emotional stresses.
I lost a lot of hair after giving birth to my second daughter. Of course, I was also knee deep in nursing school and clinicals, so I had a lot of stress on top of the hormonal. It was pretty upsetting at the time!
Re the weird hair on the belly, my friend and I had a chat about weird hairs on the face. She has black hair and discovered a super fine blond strand about three inches long on her cheek. She couldn’t believe she didn’t notice it before. I think these rogue hairs are more common than people think.
I had Marcia Brady hair until I had my first kid. Since then, it has more wave in it, and more so as I get older. I also have more grey hair, of course, but lately, I’ve been finding a number of hairs that are only grey at the tips. I have to wonder if those hairs are from when I think I had Covid back in June.
When I was a teen in the 80’s, I had long thick straight hair (that took well to perms and curling, thank goodness, lots of teasing and aqua net to get height and width. After having kids it turned curly, right around the time when straight hair was in. My sister (also a natural blonde) had straight hair growing up (that didn’t take perms well), but now it’s still thick and poker straight, she doesn’t even need to blow dry it! She’s also got my grandfather’s white hair, so her roots come in white and it doesn’t look bad (unlike mine, a mix of brown, blonde and gray). Not fair. My mom was a red red, her grays were so evenly spread that it looked like she had beautiful highlights.
Yes, I have a few of those rogue fine blond hairs on my face, but as far as I know, they never grew to more than half an inch or so. My near eyesight is not so great anymore so I could have a slew of them right now and I’d never notice! I refuse to get a magnifying mirror because I look terrifying in them. No thank you to large scale pores, and wrinkles.
I thought my daughter’s rogue hair was strange since her coloring is much different from mine.
BTW, she’s the one you tutored and is in her final semester as a civil engineering student and has made the Dean’s list most semesters! Still doesn’t like to read though, haha.
Have had thick, straight black hair all my life. D has had fine hair all her life, bleached more by the sun when she’s in it a lot. S has thick black hair with tons of body—was born that way and kept it.
I had Shirley Temple ringlets/curly hair when I was young. When I had kids my hair got straighter. After menopause (I think) I lost a lot of hair. In the winter my hair tends towards straight, and in the spring humidity people think I got a perm. I take biotin to try and keep from losing more.
When my hair is a certain length, it flips under to make a nice bob. Shorter than that, nope. Longer than that it flips out and needs to be cut. It’s pretty much the perfect length for easy care.
Y’alls’ beach perms intrigued me and I googled them. Some look straggly and I don’t like that. Would rather have a look like the brunette if possible to make my curls consistent all over. Of course I’m gray, but I’d like that look better.
As a kid I had ringlets at the end of my hair and underneath, with kind of slight wavy over the top. Through growing up I’m not sure because my sister and SIL went to beauty school, and it was the 80’s/90’s so I got a lot of perms. When married it was just wavy. Then I had two curly kids and started researching. I tried a few things I read on curltalk forums and my hair actually started getting curlier. IDK if it’s the methods (mostly just switching to sulfate-free and scrunching mousse and gel) or my age. In my mid-40’s it’s curlier than ever but still needs some encouragement especially in winter. I have fine hair but the gray hairs coming in are definitely coarser so I’m wondering what it’s going to be in the future!
My girls were pretty curly toddlers, then scraggly waves in elementary school, followed by tight curls in middle school. Younger DD’s relaxed throughout high school. She has finer hair and now it’s most of the way down her back so that doesn’t help it curl up as much as she would like. Older DD has coarser hair and her curls have been more consistent since high school. They are bigger loops, not tight, but pretty indestructible.
