hald vs olsson (math 1a)

whom should i take? 5 on BC, cc version of 53 completed with a B...im pretty good at visulizing 3-space but in not so great with the abstract, theoretical proofs which apparently hald is a fan of...btw im premed so it would help to have the easier teacher and an A in the class. thx. oh also i want a MATh minor.

Why don't you skip 1A, 1B, and 53? Since you're shooting for a math minor, you'll have completed more than enough math classes at Cal to fulfill the med school math requirements. A few people have told me that some schools don't accept Math 54 for math since it's largely not calculus, but a) they have no examples of med schools that don't take it and b) Math 104 and 185, both of which are required for the math minor, are basically advanced calculus classes that should meet the premed requirements.

Sorry to be blunt W4C, but if you don't like "the abstract, theoretical proofs", you have no business whatsoever minoring in maths. That's like saying you would like to play football, but don't care for the physical contact...

Applied maths, O.R. or engineering is more like it, but even then the theoretical and abstract side of mathematics will help expand your way of thinking and capacity to approach and solve problems.

This being said, Ole Hald is a great instructor, I had him for 1B and he was the best math prof I've had by a wide margin.

I am also wondering whether Hald or Olsson is better and am planning to take Math 1a. Also, would it be okay if I take 16b second semester (I got a 5 on BC)? I like math (why I'm taking the slightly harder series) but I heard 1b was a killer.

It really depends on your professor. I found Math 1B easier than Math 1A b/c my prof for 1B was easier than Hald.

Hahahald is funny and memorable, but I guess compared to some other 1a professors that concurrently taught 1a when I took it last year, he was supposedly harder.

thx for all the input guys...to whosthat1234: i dont think that berkeley would allow you to enroll in 1a and then go down to 16b but thats just me guessing...

they do but u only get 2 units if u do 1a-16b
