Hall or apartment

i have been assigned to the palomar hall and I am just wondering if I switched with someone to, lets say, poly canyon apartment which you have a single bedroom with other 3 people. How much more do you need to pay?

The difference in price usually evens out pretty much since people in apartments have cheaper meal plans. However, if you move, I don’t know if you can change your meal plan. Also, it depends if you’re in a double or triple in north mountain. You should be able to figure out the price based on this link: [Freshmen Fees - Residence Hall Payment Due Dates - University Housing - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo](http://www.housing.calpoly.edu/content/student_housing_freshman_fees)

would you say the triple apartment at Cerro Vista is a better option than triple rooms in north mountain?

There are no triples in cerro, only singles and doubles. There are some triple in poly canyon, but not very many. If you’re asking how a double or triple in cerro or pcv compares to a triple in north mountain, I’d say there’s some difference, but not much. The rooms in north mountain are definitely bigger than both the converted doubles and triples in cerro vista and pcv. In pcv, all the rooms converted to triples were originally intended as doubles, and all the rooms converted to doubles are only meant to fit one person, so I’d imagine these might be kind of cramped. However, the cerro and pcv apartments are much newer than north mountain, so they are also a little bit nicer. And you get a full kitchen. I guess if I had to pick, I’d go with north mountain in this case, unless you can get a single room to yourself in cerro or pcv. At least in North Mountain you get more of a dorm experience and you’ll also have access to Santa Lucia red brick common areas. People say cerro vista is far away, but it’s really not much farther than north mountain. In my opinion though, those rooms are way too small for more than one person to permanently live comfortably. And pcv really is far away, not to mention they put all the freshmen in the back most building, and some of those apartments will have up to eight people which I think is just too many to cram into such a small space.

Well thanks a lot, its really helpful

My son requested to be in the halls to get a true dorm experience as a freshman but was disappointed to be assigned to a 3 bdr apartment in Cerro Vista. My wife and I think the apartment would be nicer and roomier, but our son is considering to request a transfer to the dorms (he would prefer Yosemite or Sierra Madre).
Does anyone know who hard it might be for him to transfer from apt to dorm?
We realize how freshmen housing must’ve been impacted due to the increased no. of admitted freshmen this year so that may limit his chances to transfer.

@ SocialDad13 - All freshmen housing is impacted - doubles are triples and singles are doubles. Here is the floorplan for a 3br (6-person suite) in Cerro Vista - http://housing.calpoly.edu/sites/housing.wcms.calpoly.edu/files/documents/Fresh%20_room_dim_cerro_apt_suites.pdf</a> - what they’ve changed (from the way the room is traditionally set up) is to make the “4th bedroom” into a den, and the former living area is now a study room.

My son requested and was assigned to North Mountain (Lassen Hall).

Easiest way to switch dorms would be to find someone else who wants to switch with you. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait for a spot to open up. Likely spots will open up, but it could take anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple months. He should put in a request for room change as soon as he can though if he wants a switch - even if he hasn’t found anyone to switch with a spot could open up still (people leave Cal Poly, get kicked out of housing, etc). As long as a space opens up, moving shouldn’t be too hard.

Thanks MLM for the layout info.
NTKS17 - apparently he can’t request a switch until 2 weeks after move in (Sept 30). We’re hoping he clicks with his original roommates and decides to stay but ultimately it’s his decision. Thanks for the advice.
