holy crap. why? I’m pretty sure you can get Manchester. The requirements made it sound really easy. This girl from my school got into Edinburgh and she said it was really easy cause we’re American. Which is good cause it’s my dream school. but yeah… don’t worry TOO much

Update:

I’m applying to the MIT Delve program for next year to take AP Physics B. This will be on top of AP Calculus BC and AP English. I’ve decided to only apply for EEE. Haven’t heard back from the ACTs/SAT IIs, but I shall soon.

As of right now, I’ve narrowed down my search a touch. I’m really interested in
University of Edinburgh
Loughborough University
University of Surrey
University of Southampton
University of Glasgow/Manchester. Probably Glasgow.

By the way…

The delve program seems set up as an open program. First come first serve (to a point). I have higher qualifications than a friend who took AP Bio there over the past year. Assuming I do get into the program, how do you all feel about my app? I feel much more confident myself, but I’d like your input. All help is appreciated. <3

I’m curious, did you consider Aberdeen? I have no idea if they even do your course but for some reason people overlook it.

Southampton, Surrey, Loughborough and Edinburgh are supposed to be very strong in EEE according to the latest Times League tables. I am not sure about Glasgow and Manchester though.

Are you into sports? Loughborough is where people go who are training for the Olympics (which is big news here, since London hosts 2012). The sports facilities for all students (not just the sports ones) are therefore supposed to be fabulous.

Samual, it’s a touch too far from civilization for my liking. : )
(I’d prefer to be within an hour or two of a big city.)

I’m relatively neutral towards sports - I was moreso attracted to Lborough for the high ranking and the decent entry requirements.

I would STRONGLY suggest taking Surrey off your list. The other universities are all more or less well regarded and nice places. Surrey is neither! (and on a personal, completely biased note- EDINBURGH!)

Biased opinions are 100% what I’m looking for. :)

Still, I do feel I should have one “safety.” Given that Surrey’s requirements are rather low, I feel very confident I should get in. I’d like to have one safety.

Glasgow/Manchester aren’t my personal ideal schools, but their entry requirements aren’t nearly as high as say… Edinburghs. Should I look at those over Surrey?
Also, it is entirely possible I’ve overlooked brilliant schools that have fairly lax entry requirements. If any of you have any suggestions, I’d love it. As for entry requirements for the safety, something around 2-3 APs with 3s minimum, SAT score of ~1800 sounds lovely. I could go a bit higher, but I mean… Edinburgh is 3 APs at grade 4, SAT score of 1800. I know I can get those (My SAT scores were higher than that, and I still have another retake date where I aim to improve by ideally 100 or so). I just want to have one “DEFINITE”, if you will.

I intend to end up with 4 APs at grades 4 and 5, but I really want one safety. I’m really serious about being an international student. I’d give you the reason, but it’d take hours. Just trust meh? : P

On a side note, I want to give a tremendously large thank you to everyone who has read through my questions. You didn’t have to, and yet you took the time to listen to the worried ramblings of a stressed student. You all have my thanks, especially those who have contributed to this. <3

Zouth fair enough, poor poor Aberdeen! :(

Surrey is a very good university actually, dont listen to TARDISgal.

Aye, poor poor Aberdeen. 'Twill be missed, thou dear tiny city in the middle of nowhere…

Surrey isn’t bad? That’s good to hear. It’s nice to know my research hasn’t been horribly conducted~

Am I only able to transfer to a UK university if I’m affluent? I’m looking at the University of Edinburgh. My grades are good but my family is poor, and I wouldn’t be able to go if I had to take out a bunch of loans…is similar financial aid available as is in the United States?

Individual unis/departments may have some small scholarships, but as Edinburgh and most UK unis are state-owned they generally do not have financial aid for internationals - in fact rumour has it that many even see internationals as cash cows to subsidise the under-funded institutions since Home/EU students pay so little. You won’t see HYP-level packages there.

Practically no financial aid is offered to international student, unfortunately. The government spends so much giving £3000 tuition to UK/EU students, they can’t spend any more for others. The best bet would be to find external scholarship money at home which you can use in the UK (e.g., fastweb.com etc.).

Alternatively, you can look into the private universities in the UK that do not receive government funding.

[Richmond University - Scholarships & Financial Assistance](http://www.richmond.ac.uk/content/admissions/scholarships-financial-assistance.aspx)

[Buckingham University - Fees and scholarships](http://www.buckingham.ac.uk/study/fees/)

LOL private universities? Those places are quite seriously awful. They’re essentially for people who cant be bothered to work and want to buy their degree.

^ Well, Richmond is really for American students who want to study in London (like the American University of Paris). Don’t know how good it is…

Buckingham was created by a few Oxford professors to try to reflect the LACs of the US. It is being run by an Oxford graduate and a former Cambridge professor, and Margaret Thatcher used to run it? I suppose that doesn’t automatically make it good, but I wouldn’t equate it to the unaccredited for-profit degree mills in the US.
